Winemaker Notes - 'Ex Umbris' is Latin for 'out of the shadows'. Originally made as a one-off due to a wildfire that resulted in tremendously smoky grapes, this wine has become a NW signature Syrah. The current vintage is a blend of fruit from Mike Sauer's Red Willow Vineyard, Art DenHoed's Erickson Road Vineyard, and Bruce Morford's Slide Mountain Vineyard, each located in western Yakima Valley. The blend is balanced by fruit from the cooler, smoky Lewis Vineyard in The Dalles, and the unctuous fruitiness of Elerding Vineyard located in Alderdale, WA.
Columbia Valley, WashingtonOwen Roe Syrah Ex Umbris is a superb red wine gem from Washington made by David O'Reilly, who specializes in big, fruit-driven reds from Washington and Oregon under the Owen Roe and Sineann labels. Wine Spectator ranked this 2009 Ex Umbris #25 in its Top 100 Wines of 2011, rating it 93 points! This wine was introduced in 2002 as a one-time bottling after a wildfire struck the vineyard's surrounding hillsides. When the residual ash and smoke resonated in the Syrah grapes, a memorable wine was created! This bold Syrah is comprised from several exceptional vineyards in Washington's Columbia Valley.Owen Roe Syrah Ex Umbris is a gorgeous deep purple in color with full body. Notes of pink peppercorn, raspberry, rose petals and baking spices greet the nose, followed on the palate by flavors of bing cherry, white pepper, cedar, eucalyptus and plum. Bright acidity and a fine tannin structure make this a well balanced red of complexity and elegance. The wine spent 16 months in barrel in neutral French oak. It is long and rich on the smooth finish.Enjoy Owen Roe Syrah Ex Umbris over the next 6-8 years with filet mignon, rack of lamb, venison, rich vegetable dishes and aged cheeses.
Supple and round, this red is layered with plum, currant, sassafras, cream and spice flavors that keep sailing through the long, vivid finish. This has style and grace to go with its undeniable power. Drink now through 2018. 4,982 cases made. -HS Wine Spectator. A Syrah wine from Washington in USA. 2009 Owen Roe Syrah Ex Umbris 750ml
Winemaker's Notes:
Here it is! The new vintage of Ex Umbris reminds us of the complexity of the ‘07, but with robustness of the 2008! Amazing scents of Bing cherry pie, bacon wrapped dates, green peppercorns and molasses pervade. Rich, warm flavors of late summer strawberries, brooding dark plum and dates expand on the palate and finish with sarsaparilla and black licorice. Serve alongside herb roasted pork, game dishes and savory stuffing.
