Owen Roe Syrah Columbia Valley Ex Umbris 2006
Blockbuster Syrah from Owen Roe. A local favorite year after year and made it into the most recent 100 Wines of the Year list from wine spectator. This wine was originally crafted to express the smoky notes imparted to the Syrah grapes by a raging wild-fire. One of the characteristics of this noble grape is its inherent smokiness that can be imparted even without Mother Nature's assistance. Art DenHoed's Erickson Road Vineyard in western Yakima Valley has yielded tremendously complex and rich Syrah, balancing the cooler, smoky Lewis Vineyard in the Dalles, while the Outlook and Red Willow vineyards provide the unctuous fruitiness as each component blends into a seamless wine.
Since our first vintage in 1999, Owen Roe winery has been working to produce exceptional, hand crafted wines. We are especially committed to the low vigor hillside vineyards of Yakima Valley Washington. These vineyards yield fruit with low pH and high acidity, both harbingers of age-able wines.
Rich, luscious, great smokey dark fruits, some chocolate in there. Lovely wine. Very happy that I have 4 in the cellar. Time will tell if this one can stand up to the extrordinary 2005. Outstanding - 92 points.
Delicious. Pepper and smoke on the nose, with dark fruits and a very long, tasty finish. Always one of my favorite Owen Roe wines.
Decanted 30 minutes. Nose of blue and black fruits, smoke, chocolate, and a surprising peppery floral component. Big flavors of smokey blackberry, chocolate, and pepper. Absolutely mouthwatering! Lucious and mouthcoating, this wine has a finish that goes on and on, with just a touch of bitterness. Perhaps with more time in the decanter this will blow off.
Pop & pour. Amazingly deep and earthy, with peppery meat, smoke, and dark berry fruit. Structured as all get-out, and a joy to drink at this stage.
