Owen Roe Syrah Columbia Valley Ex Umbris 2005
Ex Umbris is Latin for “out of the shadows”. This wine was originally crafted to express the smoky notes imparted to the Syrah grapes by a raging wildfire. One of the characteristics of this noble grape is its inherent smokiness, a flavor that comes through even without Mother Nature’s assistance. Art DenHoed’s Erickson Road Vineyard, Mike Sauer’s Red Willow Vineyard, and Joe Hatrip’s Elephant Mountain Vineyard in western Yakima Valley yielded Syrah with tremendous richness. It was then balanced by the cooler, smoky Lewis Vineyard in The Dalles, and the unctuous fruitiness of Alder Ridge Vineyard in Alderdale, WA. A fabulously aromatic and full-bodied Syrah!
Since our first vintage in 1999, Owen Roe winery has been working to produce exceptional, hand crafted wines. We are especially committed to the low vigor hillside vineyards of Yakima Valley Washington. These vineyards yield fruit with low pH and high acidity, both harbingers of age-able wines.
Popped and poured. Dark, dark ruby in color. Hint of heat on the nose, with lovely dark berry and smoke. Very thick and just coats the mouth in flavors of blackberry, smoke and wood. Finish is long, and although it has some alcohol heat, very nice.
Nice and smokey. Good fruit, and excellent mouthfeel. I love this syrah!
Excellent smokey nose, dark berry and smoked meat on the palate. This wine is #69 in the Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2007.
A wonderful syrah. Must buy more.
Excellent as always...so deep and smokey. A big wine that opens up nicely.
[Blind Syrah tasting - I _think_ this was the '05] Deep syrah nose. Refined taste, almost cabby. Dark fruit, very complex and balanced. Medium tannin and acid. Quaffer. Medium+ alcohol.
I tried it over two years ago, loved it, and have been searching for it again ever since. Full of fruit, yet bold and smoky. Everything I ever wanted from a Syrah and phenomenal price.
