Owen Roe Ex Umbris Syrah Columbia Valley 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This is dark, inky and brooding in the glass, giving only hints of charcoal, black fruit and earth aromas. With air, this gains a touch of hot iron and some candied blackberry tones. Very fresh in the mouth, with noticeable extract lending a tactile impression on the palate but not so extracted as to feel forced or weighty. This is round yet very well balanced with fresh tannins and that nice acid supporting deep, inky, gingerbread-crusted blackberry fruit. There’s a nice herbal top note and something almost floral as well, but this remains a bit tight in the mouth. The finish shows some sweet, toasty oak and a long layer of bittersweet chocolate and licorice before tapering off on some fleshy fruit tones. Quite a wine. 93pts

Owen Roe:
Since our first vintage in 1999, Owen Roe winery has been working to produce exceptional, hand crafted wines. We are especially committed to the low vigor hillside vineyards of Yakima Valley Washington. These vineyards yield fruit with low pH and high acidity, both harbingers of age-able wines.

The wine is a lovely, inky indigo in the glass with rich brooding darkness that makes me recall the wonderful angst ridden culture of the Northwest back in the glory days of Grunge, but I digress. The nose is beautifully fruity, with hints of warm berries, leather and smoke. The taste is just divine, with an explosion of very bright fruit, blackberries, cherries and currant that subsides almost as quickly as it came, transitioning to some spicy notes of black pepper and toasted oak. The finish is lovely, as the young tannins hold a firm grip on the long, smooth, dry finish that makes you want to sip this wine all afternoon. Subdued nose. Minerals and graphite along with pomegranate, cranberry and other rich red and black berries. Flavors of plum, currant, sassafras and spice. It's lithe and smooth with rich flavors. Mouth coating, but not overly concentrated. Tasty! 11/12/11

THE STORY BEHIND THE LABEL: This wine was introduced as a one-time bottling in 2002 after a wild fire struck the vineyard’s surrounding hillsides. The residual ash and smoke resonated in the Syrah grapes, creating a very memorable wine. Year after year, we are asked to develop a Syrah to keep the story of this wine alive! We hope you will enjoy this bold Syrah comprised from several exceptional vineyards in the Columbia and Yakima Valleys. TASTING NOTES: The color of deep eggplant, this beautiful bold Syrah will keep our Ex Umbris fans wanting more! If the nose filled with dark chocolate, hazelnut and caramel aromas isn’t enough, the robust plum, black cherry, licorice and hints of tobacco will surely please any palate. Pair with blackened, grilled ribeye, a juicy leg of lamb or your family slow-cooker stew. This Syrah will age and is still quite youthful with gripping tannins and layers of dusty earth. We recommend decanting and enjoying with a hearty meal and holding onto a few bottles to open in a few years. Approximate cellaring time - 12+ years. 2016 VINIFICATION: Aged 16 months in French oak barrels. 14.1% Alcohol

We have done it again with the 2015 Ex Umbris Syrah. A deep garnet hued Syrah sourced from our own estate vineyards, Outlook and Union Gap, and DuBrul and Red Willow Vineyard, this Yakima Valley Syrah is bursting with lovely dark fruit aromas. Black cherry, boysenberry, blueberry and plum swirl through the glass. Flavors of dried fruits, spice, pepper and layers of pie filling, berry cobbler and cigar box fill the palate. Enjoy now after 1-2 hours decantation or cellar for 6+ months before opening your first bottle. This wine is complex and will age well for many years, so stock up and store away. You will be glad you did! - Winery

Owen Roe is a celebrated producer. Jerry Owen, on the the vineyard side, and David O'Reilly, who makes the wine, formed Owen Roe with a simple purpose: to produce excellent wines from grapes grown and cultivated in the best vineyards in the Pacific Northwest. From Oregon to Washington the wines are highly praised. This particular wine stands out not just because Columbia Valley is a great source for Syrah but the story behund it. This wine was introduced as a one-time bottling in 2002 after a wild fire struck the vineyard’s surrounding hillsides. The residual ash and smoke resonated in the Syrah grapes, creating a very memorable wine. Year after year, they are asked to develop a Syrah to keep the story of this wine alive! Now, 10 vintages later, it's going strong. 100% Syrah comprised from several exceptional vineyards in the Columbia and Yakima Valleys. It's garnered 90 point scores across the board including 91 from Antonio Galloni who said "Saturated bright ruby. Reticent, high-pitched aromas of black raspberry, kirsch, licorice and violet, complemented by some sweet oak. Very ripe, dense and smooth, showing an almost liqueur-like quality to its black cherry and saline flavors. Not at all overly sweet but the tannins are suave and fine-grained. This has enough juicy energy to expand in the bottle. As in most recent vintage, a terrific value in Washington Syrah."
