Owen Roe Ex Umbris Syrah 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This is dark, inky and brooding in the glass, giving only hints of charcoal, black fruit and earth aromas. With air, this gains a touch of hot iron and some candied blackberry tones. Very fresh in the mouth, with noticeable extract lending a tactile impression on the palate but not so extracted as to feel forced or weighty. This is round yet very well balanced with fresh tannins and that nice acid supporting deep, inky, gingerbread-crusted blackberry fruit. There’s a nice herbal top note and something almost floral as well, but this remains a bit tight in the mouth. The finish shows some sweet, toasty oak and a long layer of bittersweet chocolate and licorice before tapering off on some fleshy fruit tones. Quite a wine. 93pts

Owen Roe:
Since our first vintage in 1999, Owen Roe winery has been working to produce exceptional, hand crafted wines. We are especially committed to the low vigor hillside vineyards of Yakima Valley Washington. These vineyards yield fruit with low pH and high acidity, both harbingers of age-able wines.

The wine is a lovely, inky indigo in the glass with rich brooding darkness that makes me recall the wonderful angst ridden culture of the Northwest back in the glory days of Grunge, but I digress. The nose is beautifully fruity, with hints of warm berries, leather and smoke. The taste is just divine, with an explosion of very bright fruit, blackberries, cherries and currant that subsides almost as quickly as it came, transitioning to some spicy notes of black pepper and toasted oak. The finish is lovely, as the young tannins hold a firm grip on the long, smooth, dry finish that makes you want to sip this wine all afternoon. Subdued nose. Minerals and graphite along with pomegranate, cranberry and other rich red and black berries. Flavors of plum, currant, sassafras and spice. It's lithe and smooth with rich flavors. Mouth coating, but not overly concentrated. Tasty! 11/12/11

Soft and tasty with brambly berry flavors, and a bit of spice and smoke. Well-balanced. Very smooth finish. I really enjoyed this one!

Columbia Valley, WashingtonOwen Roe Syrah Ex Umbris is a superb red wine gem from Washington made by David O'Reilly, who specializes in big, fruit-driven reds from Washington and Oregon under the Owen Roe and Sineann labels. Wine Spectator ranked the 2009 Ex Umbris #25 in its Top 100 Wines of 2011, and this 2012 release is another winner! This wine was introduced in 2002 as a one-time bottling after a wildfire struck the vineyard's surrounding hillsides. When the residual ash and smoke resonated in the Syrah grapes, a memorable wine was created! This bold Syrah is comprised from several exceptional vineyards in Washington's Columbia Valley.Owen Roe Syrah Ex Umbris is a gorgeous deep purple in color with full body. Notes of pink peppercorn, raspberry, rose petals and baking spices greet the nose, followed on the palate by flavors of bing cherry, white pepper, cedar, eucalyptus and plum. Bright acidity and a fine tannin structure make this a well balanced red of complexity and elegance. The wine spent 16 months in barrel in neutral French oak. It is long and rich on the smooth finish.Enjoy Owen Roe Syrah Ex Umbris over the next 6-8 years with filet mignon, rack of lamb, venison, rich vegetable dishes and aged cheeses.

Owen Roe Ex Umbris Syrah was supposed to be a one-off made from grapes influenced by some fairly serious fires in the area resulting in grapes with an undeniable smoke flavor. It was so popular they continued to produce it.

A velvety red, offering ripe cherry, licorice and green olive flavors that come together on the firm-textured finish and linger nicely, balancing fruit and savory notes. Best from 2013 through 2016. 3,443 cases made. -HS (from deep volcanic ash and loess): Bright red with ruby highlights. Plush and sweet but sappy too, with a distinctly low-pH mouthfeel to the cool flavors of berries, licorice, flowers and garrigue. Very suave syrah in an approachable style, finishing with restrained sweetness, rather light tannins and very good length. (Theres very little new oak in any of these syrahs, noted proprietor/winemaker David OReilly.) ** SOLD OUT **
