Ovene Winery Chardonnay Santa Barbara County the Puzzle 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

Chardonnay Santa Barbara Co. 2005 “The Puzzle” Tasting Notes: This classic Chardonnay which is a blend of Bien Nacido Vineyard, Santa Maria Valley, and Zotovich Vineyard, Santa Rita Hills Appalachian, is a wine driven by structure containing a plethora of layers. In the glass, the balance is shown as sunny hayfields open up to caramelized apples, just as the thick, lingering texture is accented by a kiss of tartness. Winemakers Notes: On the day of harvest, the grapes from both vineyards were picked early in the morning and then whole cluster pressed into a combination of new and neutral French oak barrels and also into a small stainless steel tank. The barrels were then inoculated with ICV-D47 yeast whereas the tank juice was chilled to allow the heavy solids to settle. The tank was then racked and inoculated with M2 yeast. The barrels fermented at a natural pace and the lees were stirred periodically to increase mouthfeel and homogenize the wine. The tank fermented very slowly at cold temperatures over a period of three months to capture and enhance the fresh fruit nuances and natural acidity. The two wines were then blended together into neutral barrels and aged in the cellar for 22 months were the natural acidity and minimal cellar interaction allowed the wine to partially complete secondary fermentation and safely integrate into this beautiful, finished wine. By the numbers: Number of cases produced: 600 Oak: 22 months Francois Freres and Barrel Associates Yeast: ICV-D47 & M2 Bottled: Sterile Filtered Vineyard Composition: 60% Zotovich, 40% Bien Nacido Harvest Date: September 24, 2005 & October 10, 2005 Harvest Brix: 22.6 & 25.6 Total Acidity: 0.74 grams/100ml pH: 3.40 Finished Alcohol: 14.2%

Ovene Winery produces World Class Central Coast Pinot Noir, Syrah, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Our first release is a Rose of Syrah. This wine is reminiscent of the great Roses of Provence and Bandol on the French Riviera. Our Rose of Syrah is a complex blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, and a touch of Muscat. It is best served chilled and enjoyed on a hot summer afternoon, at festive barbeques, or at the beach with friends. Winemaking is a convergence of Nature, Art, and Science. Mother Nature gives us the weather for the vintage which defines the character of the fruit. The best vineyards are sourced, the lots carefully sorted, and the grapes become wine with loving care. State of the Art equipment is used to process the wine which is aged in French and American oak barrels. The Winemakers craft is putting the pieces of the puzzle together. Ovene Winery is the culmination of a lifetime of our family’s passion for food and wine. Ovene is dedicated to my Grandmother Merthel Ovene McConnel. Granny was an inspiration to several generations who taught us the love of God, family values, traditions and a passion for food and wine. She was known as Groovy Granny as we were growing up and told us we could accomplish anything we set our minds to. She blessed this venture despite her failing health at 94 and passed away the day after we received our first grapes and bonded winery license. We are blessed to dedicate Ovene Winery to all the inspirational women in our lives. Groovy Granny always said to save the best for last. This puzzle is now complete. The only piece missing is you. Enjoy, Mr. Ovene Read less
