Outpost Zinfandel 'Howell Mtn' 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Fair amount of wood here, making this spicy on the nose and rich with vanilla, chocolate and coffee bean aromas. Smooth and polished if dense in the mouth, with nice power behind the slightly leather dark raspberry, blackberry fruit that's framed with oak and earth notes. This finishes with lots of power and richness, but it’s also quite tannic and dry at the same time. A bit heavy-handed. 88 points

Situated high atop Howell Mountain, 2,200 feet above the floor of the Napa Valley, it's easy to see the inspiration, and natural wonder that is the essence of Outpost Wines. Outpost was established in 1998 with the mission of producing wines that are a living, breathing embodiment of this piece of extraordinary land. The unique confluence of environmental factors at the Outpost vineyards - the volcanic, rocky red soil, high altitude, gentle cooling breezes and sunny western exposure - produces fruit of incredible complexity and richness, with a distinct mountain palette you simply can't find anywhere else. Capturing the essence of the land's rugged terrain, Outpost creates world-class Zinfandel, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah from our own hand-cultivated, organically farmed 42 acre estate vineyards. The guiding principle of our wine-making program is to realize the full potential of this piece of ground, to create a living history of vintages with immense character and a true sense of place. Sharing this philosophy and intrigued by the potential of the estate's magnificent vineyards, winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown has crafted the wines from the beginning. Under Thomas' expert guidance, Outpost grapes are harvested late in the season - by hand, at dawn - to preserve the full intensity and distinctive spicy character of the mountain fruit. The grapes are processed with as little manipulation as possible. Grapes from each block within the vineyard are fermented separately so that our winemaking team can be very selective about the lots that comprise the final blend. Wines are neither fined nor filtered allowing for the full expression of the vintages' potential. At Outpost, we take our role as stewards of the land very seriously, employing sustainable farming practices at every stage of cultivation. The result is a higher quality fruit with expressive consistency over each vintage year. Remarkable wines with a sense of place, creating a growing legacy year after year, vintage after vintage. That's what we're working towards at Outpost. We invite you to discover our wines and share the journey. Read less

Nose of pencil eraser with a very complex flavor, not a typical zin.

Blue and purple fruited nose with good spice and sage. Black pepper aromas as well. Dark, plummy and rich on the palate with zesty herbs. Dark and really nice. 94 pts. 11/24/12

A fragrant introduction with prune, cooked black cherry, and chocolate galore, is followed by scents of plum, raisin, cinnamon, citrus, and an enticingly complex mix of ambered resin perfumes, forest florals, mossy pines, and Mediterranean herbs. The palate opens with strong prune, infused with bright cherry and chocolate, migrating to blackberry, plum and currants, and finally to tobacco and citrus flavors, landing on strong grapefruit at 2 hours, which remains the dominant taste for another two hours, mellowing over time but sustaining a soft, zingy, peppery mid-palate through a relatively short finish. A curious thing happens at 24 hours. The strong palate leader citrus pulls back in the pack and allows other aromas to emerge, including bright cherry and chocolate, combining with the lingering citrus remnant from the day before, to display a succulent, balanced cotillion of poignant changes on the palate. It's a new and better wine the day after opening.

This had a very admirable sweet fruit profile with some spiciness. A very nice balanced Zin with tons of character that does not bruise the palate or the senses. Wonderful red fruits. Very nice. 90/100

The 2012 Zinfandel is only slightly better than the 2011, which is an anomaly since most 2012s completely outclass their 2011 counterparts. This perfumed, complex Zinfandel offers up aromas of forest floor, underbrush, lavender, spicy blackberry and black raspberry fruit, full body, and a long, heady finish. Consume it over the next 5–6 years.

Bright medium red. Precise aromas of red berries and mint. Darker on the palate, with firm acidity giving sharp definition to the flavors of black raspberry, dark chocolate and brushy herbs. With its building tannins, this zinfandel is more firmly structured than the 2011.

The 2012 Zinfandel comes across as much more polished and less of a brute than the 2011 which is a positive given the wildness Zinfandel can show at times. Layers of blue/black fruit mint violet and orange peel all add complexity. The 2012 is a model of grace elegance and finesse qualities rarely seen in Zinfandel but that are very much present here. Once again the Outpost Zinfandel is a wine of Howell Mountain and Outpost first and foremost. Antonio Galloni.

The 2012 Zinfandel is 100% Zinfandel (1,000 cases) aged 16 months in two-thirds used French oak and one-third new oak. It boasts a dense ruby/purple color along with peppery, meaty notes intermixed with loads of raspberry and black cherry fruit. Full-bodied with no hard edges, this beauty should drink well for 5–8 years.

Good full ruby-red. Crushed blackberry, licorice and pepper on the high-toned, perfumed nose. Densely packed and vibrant, with captivating peppery lift to the intense dark fruit flavors. Finishes with substantial ripe tannins and excellent length. Seriously good zinfandel, from a site that winemaker Thomas Brown says benefits from cool years. These grapes were harvested in late October in 2010.

Another impressive wine the 2010 Zinfandel has developed beautifully over the last year. Today the 2010 is rich dark and intense. The aromas are still very much primary so readers who like complexity and nuance will have to let this sit in the cellar for another few years. Still it is impressive. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. -Antonio Galloni Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.
