Ornellaia Tenuta Dell'Ornellaia 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Deep crimson. The funny thing is that this wine smells first and foremost
Tuscan rather than like the Bordeaux blend that it is. A good
thing! Very savoury with real tang and I could swear there was some
Sangiovese in here. Zings with life but there is no obvious sweetness at all
(cf its stablemate Masseto). Great, glamorous life and
concentration. The alcohol is very well hidden. Tannins are clearly
there but are all but completely hidden by the ripe but savoury fruit. The
overall balance is definitely helped by the defiantly high acidity.
Delicious young wine that should age beautifully.
(Jancis Robinson - jancisrobinson.com - 06-Dec-2009)

Drank at dinner in Tokyo, September 2009, with a Sardinian lamb and chestnut stew, and a cheese plate. The Masseto, which we had second after an excellent Chianti earlier in the meal, was my first experience with the wine. A truly, massively rich and deep merlot, with lots of oak showing. Tuscany does the Right Bank, in spades. Just in process of being released to market. Still has a greenish aspect. Wildflowers, licorice, cherries, hints of leather, rubber, earth and mint. Great balance, clarity, long finish but the oak needs more time to integrate. Very ripe, though with an acidity high enough to counterbalance. I have a lot more I could say about this eye-opening wine, and was most glad to make its acquaintance, but personally would prefer to drink it after it had considerably more age. When I buy some of it (after a careful search for the cheapest, most reliable vendor, since it is very pricey), I fully intend to discipline myself to let it lay for five, ten, fifteen years or more. A very different statement from the winery than their Ornellaia cab blend, which I've had several times before.

The nose shows black cherry, dark chocolate, undergrowth and dried herbs. On the palate, it was full bodied with sweet red and black fruits, backed by a firm structure with hints of spice and wood. The finish was long with sour cherry. This was a beautiful, seductive tuscan wine that was perfectly balanced and has the stuffing to stand the test of time.

96 Points - Wine Spectator "Beautiful aromas of perfumes, berries and flowers turn to light toasty oak and sandalwood. Full-bodied, with very well-integrated tannins that build and coat your palate. Long and silky-textured on the finish. Shows great class and finesse. Merlot. Best after 2012...99" WS 10/09

2006 was an outstanding vintage in Tuscany and This iconic Bolgheri red is better than ever. A blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot aged 18 months in French oak barriques. The Wine Advocate scored it 97 points say "The 2006 Ornellaia flows from the glass in a profound expression of ripe, dark fruit. With time in the glass layers of minerals, cassis, tar, sweet herbs and French oak emerge, adding further complexity. This harmonious Ornellaia combines the richness of the vintage with superb freshness and awesome balance. Today the wine’s sheer density almost manages to hide the tannins, but they are there, and the wine will ultimately benefit from a few years in the cellar. The 2006 Ornellaia is one of the highlights of this sensational Tuscan vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026." The main characteristic of Ornellaia 2006 is without a doubt its lush depth and a-exuberancea (aLaEsuberanzaa). Here is apowerful, concentrated wine whose intensity is immediately obvious. Its complex, rich bouquet is complemented bysweet, dense-packed tannins and a lively acidity, and all of its components are in admirable harmony creating a veryelegant wine.
