What to Expect

The classic Bordeaux blends rely on either Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon for the bulk of the wine with additions of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec helping to add complexity, color, body and structure to the finished wine.

Winemakers Notes

The bunches were hand-picked into 15 kg bins, and the fruit was carefully graded and selected on a double sorting table, before and after destemming, After a light crushing, each variety and vineyard block was vinified separately giving birth to a total of 51 different base wines each interpreting the considerable diversity of the Estate’s terroirs.. A week-long fermentation was carried out at 26-30°C in stainless steel, followed by a maceration of 18 days. Malolactic fermentation took place in oak barrels (70% new and 30% once used). The wine remained in barriques in the temperature controlled read more...

Editorial Reviews

Intensely aromatic with layers of coffee, roasted chili, olive, and black fruits that continue to evolve all night. Still a baby in the mouth with a big, muscular feel. The tannins are polished yet abundant, the fruit is dark and rich, bordering on sweet especially with the sweet wood tones. There is a coffee cream note to the mid-palate then a bif creme de cassis note takes over on the back end and leads to the finish with it's spice, mineral and olive tones. It's a lot of wine and while not exactly my style is certainly enjoyable and that goes for amateurs as well! 2008-2016 92pts

Reviews

A cool and sleek Tuscan red, with tarragon and fresh sage aromas, blackberry and cherry undertones. Full-bodied, with a wonderfully silky palate of fine tannins and a long, fruity finish. Very sophisticated and reserved. Best after 2004. 13,330 cases... Wine Spectator. A Proprietary Blend wine from Tuscany in Italy. 1998 Ornellaia, Tenuta dell' Ornellaia 750ml

Rating: 18/20 - As reviewed by Jancis Robinson Blackish crimson. Very attractive savoury note - interesting! Sweet start, slightly inky but with real refreshment value and properly integrated cf 1997. The mineral element of the property shines through. 14.5% CS:M:CF 60:35:5 163,000 bottles

A very nice and expensive red. Very tight and closed when opened and as black as night. Upon opening three hours later, it was full of dark fruit and had a very distinctive green bell pepper flavor, which I love.

Concentrated aromas and flavors of cassis and blackberry are offset by suggestions ofherb, mint and vanilla in this elegantly structured wine, with fine, focused tannins set in a velvety texture ending in a long finish.

Jancis
Robinson

Rating: 18/20 - As reviewed by Jancis Robinson Deep crimson without as much evolution of colour as the 1997. Burley, briary nose with marked acidity. Quite aromatic. Much more backward than the 1997. Big, round fruit with a great hit of ripeness on the palate. Much more ambitious and long-term than the 1997 (Duroux, like others, argues that the 1998s are better balanced than the super-ripe 1997s in the Maremma). This one will run and run.
