The bunches were hand-picked into 15 kg bins, and the fruit was carefully graded and selected on a double sorting table, before and after destemming, After a light crushing, each variety and vineyard block was vinified separately giving birth to a total of 51 different base wines each interpreting the considerable diversity of the Estate’s terroirs.. A big, juicy red. Black, with intense aromas of black olives and sage, plus masses of fruit. Full-bodied and very velvety, with a long, long finish. A magical Masseto'the best yet. Merlot. Best after 2005.

"A cool and sleek Tuscan red, with tarragon and fresh sage aromas, blackberry and cherry undertones. Full-bodied, with a wonderfully silky palate of fine tannins and a long, fruity finish. Very sophisticated and reserved...96." WS 11/01.

This 63 acre vineyard consists of various clones of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with a small amount of Cabernet Franc. The wines are separately aged for one year in French barrels before being blended to achieve an elegant yet firm style balancing fruit, acidity, oak and tannic backbone.

Deep crimson without as much evolution of colour as the 1997. Burley, briary nose with marked acidity. Quite aromatic. Much more backward than the 1997. Big, round fruit with a great hit of ripeness on the palate. Much more ambitious and long-term than the 1997 (Duroux, like others, argues that the 1998s are better balanced than the super-ripe 1997s in the Maremma). This one will run and run.

Blackish crimson. Very attractive savoury note - interesting! Sweet start, slightly inky but with real refreshment value and properly integrated cf 1997. The mineral element of the property shines through. 14.5% CS:M:CF 60:35:5 163,000 bottles
