Orin Swift Zinfandel California Saldo 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Winemaker NotesThe 2008 Saldo is rich, ripe, and full-bodied, with aromas of black cherry and bramble fruit. The tannins are soft but the wine has a huge mid-palate. The soft, lush finish lingers. 2008 was a perfect vintage for Saldo. The hot weather was ideal for creating ripe zinfandel. Drink now and enjoy over the next five years.

Blend88% Zinfandel
8% Syrah
4% Petite Syrah

California AppellationSonoma, Napa, Mendocino, Amador, and Contra Costa

Alc/Vol15.5%

Production14,000 cases. Orin Swift Cellars is the realization of a dream that began while studying abroad at the University of Florence in Florence, Italy. Like so many other college students I was at odds with what to do upon graduation. Fortunately for me, my roommate at the time was from an old wine family in the Sonoma valley and he had a great suggestion: "Why not get into the wine business? You seem to like wine." In truth, I did enjoy wine and even more, I enjoyed the idea of what I perceived to be an honorable and honest profession. Having just finished an internship for a congressman the previous semester, the latter was very important to me. When I returned to the States, I tried to immerse myself in all aspects of the wine business, which is no easy task being in the middle of the desert at the University of Arizona. As luck would have it, I found a professor in the agriculture department who was also interested in growing grapes and in the spring of 1997 the University planted a one-acre experimental block in the heart of Tucson, Arizona. Equally important was the experience I gained while working at one of Tucson's finest retail wine shops learning the hardest part of the wine business, selling the stuff. A few months later, I found myself with a degree in political science working my first harvest for the Robert Mondavi Winery. I cut my teeth as the low man and only white guy on an all-Mexican nightshift. I was hooked. The next year, I started Orin Swift Cellars with two tons of purchased Zinfandel grapes and as my wife likes to say, with one pair of shoes. Over the last few years we've continued to grow, adding Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc to the program, as well as streamlining the Zinfandel into what is now our flagship wine, "The Prisoner". In addition, we recently purchased forty-eight acres of raw land in the hills above Oakville and hope to someday build a winery there. Until then, we welcome you to visit us at our newly renovated offices and tasting room located in the heart of downtown St. Helena at the historic Odd Fellows Lodge. From all of us at Orin Swift Cellars, we thank you for your interest and hope you continue to enjoy the wines, which we proudly offer. Read less

I asked the man for a Zinfandel like the Rombauer Zin. For $26.75, I sure need a lot more. It was just another zin. Major flaw is being overpriced.

Some sharp cheese nose, like a hard parmesan. Some sulfur tones on the nose. Lots of salinity on the palate. White pepper. Spice. Some straw. Red berries show through, but it's a tad unbalanced for me. - Tasted at Schreiner's Winers zin tasting 9/18/10

93 points. This wine’s aroma is rich with dark blackberry juice, volcanic stone, and very subtle campfire smoke components. There is a deep earthiness, like fresh, fertile soil, with a blend of spice tones, dark roses, and plums. It’s incredibly refined with a very nice sea stone minerality that gives it exceptional depth. The Prisoner opens plush and with the presence of perfectly ripe, sweet, sun-kissed berries and plums. There is almost a fruit preserves quality about it, with dark wild honey tones, fine cigar wrapper, and dark volcanic stone. There is a forest floor component, the same fresh soil quality that I detected on the nose, leaves, and sea stone. There is a faint distant smokiness, and a vague citrusy edge approaching the finish, which is reminiscent of fennel and earth. This wine is incredibly structured. It’s big, bold, and yet completely refined. There is a velvety quality to it, the fruit is exceptionally ripe, the terroir components soar, and the tannins are gripping and gentle at once. The Prisoner is truly a masterpiece with exceptional depth and definition, and a wine of this quality could easily command more than twice it’s price. An amazing wine and unquestionably a steal. Absolutely a wine worth buying. Source: What's Worth Drinking: Post #28: Orin Swift Tasting Part 1 ( http://whatsworthdrinking.com/2010/06/14/post-28-orin-swift-tasting-part-1/ )

Beautiful, dark, full-bodied. A Classic Cal zin. Not cheap but doesn't taste it either.

This wine has great fruit flavors. I don't know what the components are, since it is just labeled "Red Wine", but they are well balanced. Great fruit - red and black berries, and smooth, even with 15.2% alcohol. Nice tannins, and a lasting finish. Raspberries and cherries. Great one to drink by itself - no food required. Don't splurge, but, if you are looking to impress, a great one that will incite conversation. What do you taste?

We always enjoy wines from Orin Swift and Saldo is no exception! Has a lot of zip to it so it's a nice complement to a big, juicy burger.

Very dark purple/red from the core until it hits a clear rim. The nose is extremely fresh (which makes sense for such a young wine), and is full of brambly blackberry aromas, fresh white grape juice, black cherry, and a fine aromatic layer of spice.... This recalls those great old California field blends, but with more polish and structure. Aromas of smoky boysenberry and cracked pepper lead to layered, zesty flavors of plum, tobacco and anise. Drink now through 2013.
