Orin Swift Cellars is the realization of a dream that began while studying abroad at the University of Florence in Florence, Italy. Like so many other college students I was at odds with what to do upon graduation. Fortunately for me, my roommate at the time was from an old wine family in the Sonoma valley and he had a great suggestion: "Why not get into the wine business? You seem to like wine." In truth, I did enjoy wine and even more, I enjoyed the idea of what I perceived to be an honorable and honest profession. Having just finished an internship for a congressman the previous semester, the latter was very important to me. When I returned to the States, I tried to immerse myself in all aspects of the wine business, which is no easy task being in the middle of the desert at the University of Arizona. As luck would have it, I found a professor in the agriculture department who was also interested in growing grapes and in the spring of 1997 the University planted a one-acre experimental block in the heart of Tucson, Arizona. Equally important was the experience I gained while working at one of Tucson's finest retail wine shops learning the hardest part of the wine business, selling the stuff. A few months later, I found myself with a degree in political science working my first harvest for the Robert Mondavi Winery. I cut my teeth as the low man and only white guy on an all-Mexican nightshift. I was hooked. The next year, I started Orin Swift Cellars with two tons of purchased Zinfandel grapes and as my wife likes to say, with one pair of shoes. Over the last few years we've continued to grow, adding Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc to the program, as well as streamlining the Zinfandel into what is now our flagship wine, "The Prisoner". In addition, we recently purchased forty-eight acres of raw land in the hills above Oakville and hope to someday build a winery there. Until then, we welcome you to visit us at our newly renovated offices and tasting room located in the heart of downtown St. Helena at the historic Odd Fellows Lodge. Dark nose, not very expressive. Peppery cassis and blackberry. On the palate, flavors of ripe strawberry and black fruits with nicely integrated oak. Mouth coating entry with nice structure and good acidity. Long finish with soft tannins and subtle oak sweetness. The tangy dark berry fruit is layered with pepper. Savory aftertaste. 6/9/12

A delicious Zinfandel (rare that I adore a Zinfandel). Lush, dark fruits, pepper and spice. On the dry side but good balance and lovely from start to soft, lingering finish. Have some to cellar; post wine tasting had to break open a bottle with dinner and asiago cheese and gala apples both paired up nicely. From the nose (harsh, dark, rather strongly of alcohol even well-breathed in proper glass) would not have expected such a delightful wine.

11/27/2012 - TSBWINE WROTE: 90 Points 89-91 points. You really have to take this wine for what it is. It's not a dramatic wine or one that even exhibits exceptional structure/balance. In fact, it's somewhat angular with the acid/tannin profile being rather unrefined. However, it's still a tasty wine with some real high points and desirable characteristics that are sometimes hard to find in other wines. The fruit is more typical of a wildberry due its brambly character (spice and pepper) and it's expressive on the nose and palate. There's a nice intensity there yet it's not overripe. This transitions to a very generous mocha/coffee note on the midpalate that's accentuated by the supple tannins and acids. Texturally, there's a convergence of acids and oak tannin that contribute to the overall impression of the characteristic. There's even a milk chocolate note possibly due to lactic acid levels (from MLF) in the wine. No doubt there's an oak influence here too in terms of taste which helps promote the mocha notes. What's most striking is how harmonious the wine becomes on the mid-palate when all these influences intersect. For all its flaws, I admire how it expresses those coffee/mocha notes even if it only does so for a few passing moments. In that sense, it's a classic "palate-building" wine that is so key to building recognition. If you come in with expectations of a traditional wine (Or Zin) you might come away disappointed. However if you approach it with an open mind chances are it will be a far more memorable wine despite its shortcomings. Recommend sharing this with someone who's relatively new to tasting so that you can help them discover some new wine characteristics. I don't know how it will develop over the years but my instinct is that it's best now since it likely wasn't built to age. 1 person found this helpful, do you? Huge nose of dark fruit and cherries, obviously full bodied with a lasting finish which gives it some complexity. Not up to par with the 07 in my opinion, but still a typical Orin Swift. The first night this would have received mid 80s, but it evolved by night 2. Needs lots of air time and certainly more time in the bottle. 1 person found this helpful, do you? Very dark purple/red from the core until it hits a clear rim. The nose is extremely fresh and filled with brambly blackberry aromas, white grape juice, black cherry, and a fine aromatic layer of spice. For such a ripe year, this Zinfandel shows remar... Winemaker Notes - Through the success of his Prisoner label, Orin Swift Cellars owner/winemaker Dave Phinney has gained access to some of the best Zinfandel vineyards in the Northern California growing community. Dave recently decided he wanted to make a high quality Zinfandel and what he created did not fit the constraints of a single AVA. The word "saldo" has many different meanings in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. In Spanish, it mainly refers to "balance on hand", and sometimes it can mean "from here and there." This wine represents the best of the best lots made by Dave from vineyards all across Northern California.
