91 points. The nose opens with spiced cranberry and tart bing cherry. There is a good amount of pepper and a deep, rich, earthy component. The terroir on this wine is quite impressive, and it shows black stone, and volcanic soil tones with deep dark herbal tones and the faintest touch of leaves. The palate is silky and very delicately spiced. This is not one of those over the top zinfandels that topple over the palate with excessive alcohol. It’s incredibly refined and smooth with a certain Old World lightness and bright acidity. There are rich flavors of red plum and cherry, with a slightly leafy component, soft wildflower tones, and a good amount of earth. The fruit is ripe and plush, while the tannins still maintain a firm, caressing grip. This wine has excellent control over its alcohol and the structure is exceptional. A very well done effort, with nice complexity and a lingering coffee toned finish, this proves that Zinfandels have the capability to be more than just big, jammy wines to enjoy at a backyard barbeque. Nicely done and excellently priced, a wine well worth buying. This big wine opens tight and takes two hours to reveal its wonders. When it does begin to open, it provides a dynamic ride for another two hours. The nose shows first signs of the wine’s promise when orange peel and an array of vegetable aromas begin to drift from the glass. At two hours, beets and asparagus, along with scents of cut garden stems, intermingle with floral perfumes. At three hours, coffee and caramel join the parade and harmonies multiply. The palate launches from an earthy bottom with beets and cut stems on the top. At three hours, the assortment of flavors sweetens nicely with the emergence of dark fruits, including blackberry, pomegranate and cassis, along with cranberry and tart cherry. A zingy acidity provides center support for the fruits and a spicy tang on the finish. Vanilla and soft notes of oak provide a backdrop for the dance of other flavors. The medley continues to evolve in the fourth hour, arriving at a combination reminiscent of orange coffee cake. This wine stands up well around spicy vegetables, sauces and beef.

Arriving early May 2012!Napa Valley, CaliforniaOrin Swift Papillon is a beautiful Napa Valley red blend from gifted winemaker Dave Phinney. Owner of Orin Swift Cellars, Dave Phinney has come a long way since beginning his winemaking career with 2 tons of purchased Zinfandel grapes just a year out of college in 1998! Following big successes with wines such as Papillon and The Prisoner, Phinney has launched several new labels in recent vintages, including Abstract and Palermo. Grapes for this vintage of Papillon were sourced from Howell Mountain, Saint Helena, Rutherford, and Oakville to gain better complexity and structure. Many of the same vineyards that created this wine in previous vintages are here again; Taplin, Lewelling, Moorhead, Ink Grade, Morisoli, and Sommerston to name a few. A blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot that is aged for 16 months in French oak.Papillon has a deep red color with a garnet hue that is almost black.
