Orin Swift Cellars is the realization of a dream that began while studying abroad at the University of Florence in Florence, Italy. Like so many other college students I was at odds with what to do upon graduation. Fortunately for me, my roommate at the time was from an old wine family in the Sonoma valley and he had a great suggestion: "Why not get into the wine business? You seem to like wine." In truth, I did enjoy wine and even more, I enjoyed the idea of what I perceived to be an honorable and honest profession. Having just finished an internship for a congressman the previous semester, the latter was very important to me. When I returned to the States, I tried to immerse myself in all aspects of the wine business, which is no easy task being in the middle of the desert at the University of Arizona. As luck would have it, I found a professor in the agriculture department who was also interested in growing grapes and in the spring of 1997 the University planted a one-acre experimental block in the heart of Tucson, Arizona. Equally important was the experience I gained while working at one of Tucson's finest retail wine shops learning the hardest part of the wine business, selling the stuff. A few months later, I found myself with a degree in political science working my first harvest for the Robert Mondavi Winery. I cut my teeth as the low man and only white guy on an all-Mexican nightshift. I was hooked. The next year, I started Orin Swift Cellars with two tons of purchased Zinfandel grapes and as my wife likes to say, with one pair of shoes. Over the last few years we've continued to grow, adding Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc to the program, as well as streamlining the Zinfandel into what is now our flagship wine, "The Prisoner". In addition, we recently purchased forty-eight acres of raw land in the hills above Oakville and hope to someday build a winery there. Until then, we welcome you to visit us at our newly renovated offices and tasting room located in the heart of downtown St. Helena at the historic Odd Fellows Lodge. From all of us at Orin Swift Cellars, we thank you for your interest and hope you continue to enjoy the wines, which we proudly offer. Read less

A bit oaky on the nose. Nice long flavor profile. Went well with Blue Cheese. Good acid.

91 points. The nose opens with spiced cranberry and tart bing cherry. There is a good amount of pepper and a deep, rich, earthy component. The terroir on this wine is quite impressive, and it shows black stone, and volcanic soil tones with deep dark herbal tones and the faintest touch of leaves. The palate is silky and very delicately spiced. This is not one of those over the top zinfandels that topple over the palate with excessive alcohol. It’s incredibly refined and smooth with a certain Old World lightness and bright acidity. There are rich flavors of red plum and cherry, with a slightly leafy component, soft wildflower tones, and a good amount of earth. The fruit is ripe and plush, while the tannins still maintain a firm, caressing grip. This wine has excellent control over its alcohol and the structure is exceptional. A very well done effort, with nice complexity and a lingering coffee toned finish, this proves that Zinfandels have the capability to be more than just big, jammy wines to enjoy at a backyard barbeque. Nicely done and excellently priced, a wine well worth buying. Arriving early May 2012!Napa Valley, CaliforniaOrin Swift Papillon is a beautiful Napa Valley red blend from gifted winemaker Dave Phinney. Owner of Orin Swift Cellars, Dave Phinney has come a long way since beginning his winemaking career with 2 tons of purchased Zinfandel grapes just a year out of college in 1998! Following big successes with wines such as Papillon and The Prisoner, Phinney has launched several new labels in recent vintages, including Abstract and Palermo. Grapes for this vintage of Papillon were sourced from Howell Mountain, Saint Helena, Rutherford, and Oakville to gain better complexity and structure. Many of the same vineyards that created this wine in previous vintages are here again; Taplin, Lewelling, Moorhead, Ink Grade, Morisoli, and Sommerston to name a few. A blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot that is aged for 16 months in French oak.Papillon has a deep red color with a garnet hue that is almost black. The aromas are of classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon with cedar box, rose petal and hints of soft French oak. The entry is subtle ripe raspberry and boysenberry. Loads of cherry, plum and intense cassis frame long chains of soft tannins that form a long and lingering finish.Enjoy Orin Swift Papillon with steak, lamb chops, BBQ ribs, grilled vegetables and aged cheeses.

This intense, vibrant red delivers a firm, tannic mix of rich dried berry, fresh earth, crushed rock and roasted herb flavors, gaining depth and holding its focus. Ends with raw, chewy tannins. Needs time. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Best from 2014 through 2024.

The wine has a very dense garnet hue with a slight stain of cardinal on the rim. Aromas of plum and cassis are built around soft French oak and cedar box nuances. The entry is intense, yet elegant with loads of boysenberry and dark fruit flavors. Well integrated tannin chains provide for a long, soft finish.78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc 2% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot Orin Swift Website
