Orin Swift Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Palermo 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

Aromas of dark, brooding fruit with subtle French oak in the background lead into a smooth entry of ripe cherry and fig. The mid-palate is subtle and stretches with loads of bright acidity and candied cassis. Layers of stone fruit and ribena lead into a round, supple, lingering finish of integrated soft tannins that roll on and on. This wine is amazing now and has another 8 to 10 years in it at least! Wine Makers Notes "Dense and chewy, with complex dark berry, mocha, cedar and plum flavors. Tight and focused, this red is impressive on the finish, where the flavors flow freely...91" WS 10/12

Orin Swift Cellars is the realization of a dream that began while studying abroad at the University of Florence in Florence, Italy. Like so many other college students I was at odds with what to do upon graduation. Fortunately for me, my roommate at the time was from an old wine family in the Sonoma valley and he had a great suggestion: "Why not get into the wine business? You seem to like wine." In truth, I did enjoy wine and even more, I enjoyed the idea of what I perceived to be an honorable and honest profession. Having just finished an internship for a congressman the previous semester, the latter was very important to me. When I returned to the States, I tried to immerse myself in all aspects of the wine business, which is no easy task being in the middle of the desert at the University of Arizona. As luck would have it, I found a professor in the agriculture department who was also interested in growing grapes and in the spring of 1997 the University planted a one-acre experimental block in the heart of Tucson, Arizona. Equally important was the experience I gained while working at one of Tucson's finest retail wine shops learning the hardest part of the wine business, selling the stuff. A few months later, I found myself with a degree in political science working my first harvest for the Robert Mondavi Winery. I cut my teeth as the low man and only white guy on an all-Mexican nightshift. I was hooked. The next year, I started Orin Swift Cellars with two tons of purchased Zinfandel grapes and as my wife likes to say, with one pair of shoes. Over the last few years we've continued to grow, adding Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc to the program, as well as streamlining the Zinfandel into what is now our flagship wine, "The Prisoner". In addition, we recently purchased forty-eight acres of raw land in the hills above Oakville and hope to someday build a winery there. Until then, we welcome you to visit us at our newly renovated offices and tasting room located in the heart of downtown St. Helena at the historic Odd Fellows Lodge. From all of us at Orin Swift Cellars, we thank you for your interest and hope you continue to enjoy the wines, which we proudly offer. Read less

Wow. Just wow. And I am usually not the biggest Cab fan. This was as bold and as dry as most Cab but had a more complex flavor. A favorite (unfortunately limited run) with almost every food.

2010 Napa Valley Cabernet SauvignonAt Orin Swift we purchase Cabernet Sauvignon grapes for Mercury Head and Papillon. Every year we buy more grapes than we need for the two blends. We do this so we always have multiple vineyards and corresponding wine characteristics to choose from. We also experiment with different grape maturity levels, French barrel producers, and fermentation techniques. This is done to try to learn more with each vintage and create a wine with greater complexity and balance. These multiple lots either add something to the final blend or become their own parts, parts we consider to be separate among equals. We blended these separate but equal parts together in a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon called Palermo.Tasting NotesAromas of dark, brooding fruit with subtle French oak in the background lead into a smooth entry of ripe cherry and fig. Napa Valley, CaliforniaOrin Swift Palermo is a gorgeous new Napa Valley Cab from gifted winemaker Dave Phinney. Owner of Orin Swift Cellars, Dave Phinney has come a long way since beginning his winemaking career with 2 tons of purchased Zinfandel grapes just a year out of college in 1998! Following big successes with wines such as Papillon and The Prisoner, Phinney has launched several new labels in recent vintages, including Abstract and Palermo. Palermo Cabernet Sauvignon is made from the excess grapes purchased to blend Mercury Head and Papillon, so this wine is a tremendous value! Orin Swift Palermo Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc from well-drained hillside vineyards in the Napa Valley. Aromas of dark, brooding fruit with subtle French oak in the background lead into a smooth entry of ripe cherry and fig. The mid-palate is subtle and stretches with loads of bright acidity and candied cassis. Layers of stone fruit and black currant lead into a round, supple, lingering finish of integrated soft tannins that roll on and on. This wine is amazing now and has another 8 to 10 years in it at least! Aged for 16 months in French oak, 30% new. 15.5% alc.Enjoy Orin Swift Palermo Cabernet Sauvignon with steak, lamb chops, BBQ ribs, grilled vegetables and aged cheeses.

Dense and chewy, with complex dark berry, mocha, cedar and plum flavors. Tight and focused, this red is impressive on the finish, where the flavors flow freely. Drink now through 2025.
