Orin Swift Cellars is the realization of a dream that began while studying abroad at the University of Florence in Florence, Italy. Like so many other college students I was at odds with what to do upon graduation. Fortunately for me, my roommate at the time was from an old wine family in the Sonoma valley and he had a great suggestion: "Why not get into the wine business? You seem to like wine." In truth, I did enjoy wine and even more, I enjoyed the idea of what I perceived to be an honorable and honest profession. Having just finished an internship for a congressman the previous semester, the latter was very important to me. When I returned to the States, I tried to immerse myself in all aspects of the wine business, which is no easy task being in the middle of the desert at the University of Arizona. As luck would have it, I found a professor in the agriculture department who was also interested in growing grapes and in the spring of 1997 the University planted a one-acre experimental block in the heart of Tucson, Arizona. Equally important was the experience I gained while working at one of Tucson's finest retail wine shops learning the hardest part of the wine business, selling the stuff. A few months later, I found myself with a degree in political science working my first harvest for the Robert Mondavi Winery. I cut my teeth as the low man and only white guy on an all-Mexican nightshift. I was hooked. The next year, I started Orin Swift Cellars with two tons of purchased Zinfandel grapes and as my wife likes to say, with one pair of shoes. Over the last few years we've continued to grow, adding Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc to the program, as well as streamlining the Zinfandel into what is now our flagship wine, "The Prisoner". In addition, we recently purchased forty-eight acres of raw land in the hills above Oakville and hope to someday build a winery there. Until then, we welcome you to visit us at our newly renovated offices and tasting room located in the heart of downtown St. Helena at the historic Odd Fellows Lodge. From all of us at Orin Swift Cellars, we thank you for your interest and hope you continue to enjoy the wines, which we proudly offer. Read less

Most serious wine drinkers out there have that one bottle that got them serious and this was definatly mine. Perfect smooth entry, lots of dark fruits, and amazing lingering finish. When you have a special occasion this is the wine to get.

this is one powerfully rich wine, high in alcohol (you can taste it) but it's almost balanced out by the rich jammy-like flavors of currant, blackberries, and plums and leaves you knocked off your feet. a bit intense on it's own

Delicious wine full of heavy, dark fruits, smoke and spice. Some dark cherry, blackberry, and plum with a touch of pepper. Near perfect tannins and a lingering finish. Drink now or cellar: either way it's a winner.

I must admit that this bottle really impressed me. The nose showed spicy raspberry preserves, lavender and creme fraiche. The palate was full and soft with raspberries, savory herbs, violet candies and milk chocolate. Nice long finish.

Had two bottles of this wine. Decadent, hedonistic and fantastic! It's a very alcoholic wine, but you could get into trouble not realizing it's bite amidst all the rich berry and spice notes. Predominantly zinfandel, it has the usual ripeness and smokiness you'd expect, but with cab and syrah thrown in, it also takes on a velvety, rich feel and taste. It's like the Rhone and the left bank got together for a party and we're lucky to have been invited.

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Mercury Head, which comes from primarily St. Helena vineyards blended with fruit from the Stagecoach Vineyard on Atlas Peak, is a fabulous 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 16 months in 50% new French oak. A Mercury Head dime is actually embedded in the bottle’s glass and represents the front label. If that’s not original enough, the wine itself is fabulous. Its dense purple color is followed by notes of blackcurrants, black raspberries, acacia flowers, cedarwood and a touch of espresso. Swift is so quality conscience he declassified both the 2010 and 2011, so this is the first vintage he has produced since 2009. Full-bodied with sweet, well-integrated tannins, enough acidity for delineation and brightness, and a 45+-second finish, this stunning 2012 can be drunk now or aged for 20–25 years.

2009 Mercury Head Cabernet SauvignonMercury Head is the slang term for the authentic Liberty Dime which serves as the wines "front label". As a kid Dave Phinney collected these dimes. Years later, after getting one with some change, he was reminded how striking they are.2009 Mercury Head marks the ninth vintage of what we consider to be our best Cabernet Sauvignon lots. This vintage was all about low yields and highly concentrated fruit. Small berries and smaller clusters got super ripe while retaining bright acidity and mature tannins. Our aim is to have subtle oak nuances that wont dominate the fruit, only accent the aroma. You could open one tonight or age it for up to 10 years.Tasting NotesRipe aromas of cassis, violet and boysenberry lead into a lush mouth-coating entry. The mid-palate has hints of dark cherry amd bramble fruit framed by bright acidity and subtle structure. The finish is soft and extremely long with chains of ripe tannins. - WineryBlend:95% Cabernet Sauvignon...
