What to Expect

Zinfandel is considered America's own great indigenous grape, even though its origins lie on the Adriatic coast. Planted throughout California and the Pacific Northwest, Zinfandel is at its best in warm regions with cooler temperatures during harvest. The wines can range from off-dry Rosés, White Zinfandels, and light bistro styled wines, to big, rich powerful wines - even luscious wines for dessert bottling. The flavors range from plummy to raspberry, although deep blackberry fruit and brambly spice tones are most common.

It's rare that a Zin has this much structure and finesse. Offers appealing aromas of plum, pepper and tobacco, with focused, layered wild berry, pencil lead and sage flavors. Wonderful dessert wine with chocolate. Nice and hefty with lots of plum. Not as good as 04, 05 or 06. Try to get those first.

Not his best year. 2006 blows 2007 away. Save your money and find the 04-06 bottles. For $30 I'd rather pick up a Molly Dooker or a Chalk Hill Cab. Orin has produced magic but missed the mark on this vintage compared to previous years.

Tasting Notes - Orin Swift s Proprietary Blend The Prisoner has become the stuff of legend for many of us in the industry. We can never get enough - it always sells out - and (most importantly) the juice in the bottle is fantastic year in and year out. Predominantly Zinfandel with a dash of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah blended in, it's up there with the best California Zins that cost twice as much. Lush and ripe, this is a decadent wine with excellent structure and great complexity. The 2007 Prisoner blend is 50% Zinfandel, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Syrah, 9% Petite Sirah and a dash of Charbono and Grenache.

Owen Sullivan The Prisoner 2007 is a Zinfandel based wine that is big and generous. Cab and Syrah give body and finesse to round out the Zin flavors. An effective blend, one that could improve with 3 years of further aging (October 2009).

I LOVE this wine! One of my top threes red-blend fav's. There isn't anything I don't like about it. One of the smoothest wines...from the first sip to the finish, it is a delight to sip on. Just wish it was less expensive so I could enjoy it every day!

1. 2007 Orin Swift The Prisoner - Napa Valley (15.2%) - Color: perfect (interpret as you will), Nose: ooo, a bit hot, time to decant….(“Smells like a winner! -Alastor), Taste: Ahh, just dances on the tongue…like Pop Rocks, very strong chocolate notes, cloves, cinnamon, subtle, plums, solid lasting finish that reminds me of home.
Lamarr: A, strong A (a very good wine, yet could by a wine of similar stature for much less, low 20s. Interested in the ‘04 through ’06 vintages, as I’m told those blow this out of the water)
