What to Expect

Sauvignon Blanc has a long history in France, and is even one of the parents of the most famous grape of all, Cabernet Sauvignon. Though having achieved high levels of acceptance and popularity in France, Sauvignon Blanc was more commonly associated with specific regions or villages, Pouilly Fume for example. With its arrival in new Zealand, and the country's ability to draw out a level of intensity from the grape, it was poised for bigger and better things. New Zealand's Sauvignon Blanc is often suggested as an alternative to Chardonnay. Its incredibly bright flavor, snappy acidity and fresh, easy feel are a perfect contrast to the rich, buttery full-bodied style of Chardonnay that is most popular. The citrus, pineapple and kiwi fruit tones most common in New Zealand's Sauvignon Blanc are paired with intensely green aromatics that recall gooseberries, freshly cut grass, and jalapenos, offering an unusual and unusually compelling blend of savory and sweet that has found a huge following.

Winemakers Notes

Aroma: Passion fruit and ripe melon, with herbal notes and hints of flint.

Taste: Bright, tropical fruit with refreshing mineral finish.

Name story: Mana is a traditional Maori word meaning the ethereal substance from which magic is formed and souls are made.

Vineyards and winemaking: Shallow and stony soils with overlying sandy loam. Hand-picked and pressed. Tank fermentation at warm temperatures. Aged on the lees for 4 months.

Editorial Reviews

big fruity nose with aggressive grass, chili, and dusty gravel tones over passion fruit and even pomegranate tinged fruit , big entry, very zesty with gooseberry, lime and again a touch of pomegranate berry fruitiness, rich but still almost steely with nice balance, finishes with nice cleansing acidity and moderate acidity 88pts

Oriel tapped Ant MacKenzie to be winemaker for its Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, and the result is a wine that marries ripe nectarines with more grassy, herbal, tomato-leaf notes. It?s medium in body, finishing crisp and refreshing. -Wine Enthusiast 88 pts

Subtle and bright, with very good intensity to lime, gravel and grass flavors. Refreshing green apple and thyme notes extend through the finish. Drink now. 2,400 cases made. -Wine Spectator 87 pts

Pale gold with green highlights, this wine has a classic nose of gooseberry aromas tinged with cat pee. In the mouth it is bracing with acidity. Crackling limestone, kiwi, and gooseberry flavors race around the palate leaving airy residues of green grass and green apple flavors dangling from the edges of the mouth. Very true to form, and quite delicious. -Alder Yarrow, Vinography 9-9.5 out of 10 points
