One word: Fabulous. This is luscious, fruit forward wine with good remaining life, provided that you got it from a source that kept it well. This is not the wine for those who love dry, more restrained Italians, but there again, why would they buy THIS?

The 2001 Oreno is simply a great wine. An inky ruby with purple highlights, intensely expansive and sweet on a fruit-rich nose which is loaded with smoky tar and graphite notes, it is packed and powerful on the palate with a density and concentration which are cunningly concealed by the plush and caressing texture, the superb balance and exceptional length of the finish and aftertaste. Drink: 2005ndash;2025.

The sizzling summer heat in Tuscany in 2003 overwhelmed this estatersquo;s early-ripening Merlot, so owner Antonio Moretti took consulting enologist Carlo Ferrinirsquo;s advice to omit the customary 25 percent Merlot in the blend. The result was an even mix of the best Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese from the estatersquo;s 136 acres of vineyards, which include some 70-year-old Sangiovese vines. Oreno is aged in new oak barrels for 18 months, is not filtered before it is bottled, and rests for a year before being released.

Gorgeous aromas of blackberry, currant, raspberry and just a hint of toasty oak and coffee. Full-bodied, with supervelvety tannins and wonderful balance. The finish goes on and on. 40 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 40 percent Merlot and 20 percent Sangiovese. Best after 2011.

Oreno is a sexy blend of sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon and merlot grown in a mix of limestone and the galestro-schist soils common to Tuscany. At first pass, this '05 is fairly closed, save for a dark scent of cassis and hard-edged minerality. That structure relents slightly with air, the wine becoming more savory, with a black mushroom earthiness contrasting the fresh character of the fruit. Impeccably balanced, with lasting flavors of wild cherries and earth, this will drink beautifully for 20 years or more.

A blockbuster wine with finely tuned renderings of coffee, tobacco, spice and leather, Oreno requires a rare steak cooked on a mesquite grill or something similarly big and bold. In the mouth, this Sangiovese-Merlot-Cabernet blend delivers loads of spice that leaves a lasting impression thanks its firm tannins. Drink after 2010.

Winemaker's Notes:

The blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from vines of an average age of 15 to 20 years results in an internationally-styled, super Tuscan wine. The wine’s dense, violet color suggests its Cabernet component which is confirmed in aromas of cassis, black stone fruit and wild cherries offset by notes of herbs, spice and sweet oak. These carry into ripe, densely fruited palate marked by firm yet elegant tannic structure and integrated vanilla oak, ending in a long, refined finish.
