Opus One Red Bordeaux Blend Napa Valley Overture NV

Winemaker's Notes:

A second label from Opus One Winery, Overture is comprised of the same five varietals that go into Opus One. This is a non-vintage wine that may be blended from different years, and is only available at the winery or this website. Aged in new French oak, Overture is composed of the classic varietals of Bordeaux: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Less structured than Opus One and more approachable in its youth, Overture shows generous fruit and a soft, supple mid-palate. Overture is available in small quantities and only at the winery and this website.

Opus One is a winery in Oakville, CA founded as a joint “NapaMedoc” venture between legendary winemakers Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi in 1979, although the name didn’t become official until 1982. The first few vintages, beginning in 1979, instantly created a luxury brand fetching prices upwards of $50, then considered the height of indulgence. They were produced by Mouton Rothschild winemaker Lucien Sionneau and Robert Mondavi’s son, Timothy. Opus One boosted the then fledgling Napa industry, adding a certain air of pedigree to the region.    The wines are now under the direction of Michael Silacci, produced as a Meritage blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. This “cult” wine is now in constant demand the world over, from American steak houses to private Japanese cellars.  Read less

Think this bottle a friend brought was not cellared properly - was about 5 years old. Sort of a fruit bomb with no tannins to speak of - had one glass and passed on the rest. Would have liked to taste it in its prime, but won't seek this out for the price.

You can only get Overture at the winery, and it is always worth picking up some if you get to Opus One. It's non vintage but this one had been in my cellar three years and I am guessing it was from 2002-2003. Lovely complex developed wine, not a fruit bomb but more briary, cedar, cigar tobacco complexity with just enough acid balance. Soft tannins that really worked with a steak.
