We had been talking about sharing this wonderful, infamous and indeed famous wine for weeks. I could not wait any longer. The time was now! We slowly opened the wine and poured the first glass. The Opus One is a deep, dark cherry color – almost opaque. I wanted to drink it immediately, but out of respect for the wine I swirled it for a minute and then inhaled my first nose. The aroma is subtle and not pungent like I thought it would be - ripe cherries and dark chocolate with a hint of aniseed. I slowly took my first sip and truly understood the hype! Smooth, rich, creamy, smoky, intense with a taste of bitter chocolate and sweet ripe cherries. As the wine opened up more it rested nicely on the palate and had a fullness that made this wine really juicy – incredible tannins that made you suck your cheeks in a little. The finish was long and memorable. This is quite possibly one of the sexiest wines I have every tasted and at an average price point (retail) of $200 a bottle, it really should be and is (for me anyway) the Brad Pitt of wines.

As a wine, Opus One is quite good. As a phenomenon, it's hard to beat. Opus can be found all over the civilizes world. For many American wine drinkers, it is synonymous with celebration and the concept of "making it". The '95 is a big, tannic wine that needs two years or so to relax and show well. It's well balanced, and has dark plum fruit surrounded by a solid frame of French oak. Order a glass at your local upscale steakhouse to accompany your filet mignon.

95 points - Robert Parker"The 2007 has terrific black currant fruit, licorice, incense, and subtle smoke, an opulent, even voluptuous mouthfeel, dazzling purity and texture, and a skyscraper-like mouthfeel. This is a sensational Opus One, with sweet tannin and impressive precision and depth. It can be drunk now or cellared for 25+ years." (12./09)94 points - Wine Spectator"Tight and firm, with a chewy edge to the dried currant, graphite, blackberry and mineral notes. Full-bodied and intense, without being weighty, this is well-structured with a complex, persistent finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Best from 2012 through 2022." (10/10)93 points - Stephen Tanzer"Deep red-ruby. Very sexy, perfumed aromas of ripe black raspberry, roast coffee and flowers; there's a wildness here that I find compelling. Quite fresh and juicy in the mouth, but with a slightly exotic character to the dark berry, black cherry, smoky oak and bitter chocolate flavors. Not a fat style of 2007 but perfumed and energetic. Most impressive today on the firm, long finish, where substantial ripe tannins reach the front teeth. Built for a long evolution in bottle. I'd love to compare this against the 2006 in ten years." The joint venture that started it all between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. An extraordinary Bordeaux blend from Napa Valley. Robert Parker scored this 2007 95 points saying "(One)of the strongest wines ever made at Opus One, the 2007 has terrific black currant fruit, licorice, incense, and subtle smoke, an opulent, even voluptuous mouthfeel, dazzling purity and texture, and a skyscraper-like mouthfeel. A wine of subtlety and grace, Opus One doesn t rush to reveal itself; and neither does the winery. One thousand barrels are arranged side by side in the Grand Chai, where the wine is nurtured and aged in new French oak during the first year of its life.

Winemaker's Notes:

Picture perfect until late August, the 2007 vintage posed an unusual challenge, with a heat spell in September followed by rains and the threat of frost. Selective harvesting (the majority at night) produced a vintage recalling the generous 2001, with aromas of cassis, nutmeg, raspberries, cola, fresh oats, dark chocolate and forest floor. Polished, supple and harmoniously precise, the 2007 fuses a seamless mid-palate with soft yet sinewy tannins. The wine will age effortlessly for decades.
