The first few vintages, beginning in 1979, instantly created a luxury brand fetching prices upwards of $50, then considered the height of indulgence. They were produced by Mouton Rothschild winemaker Lucien Sionneau and Robert Mondavi’s son, Timothy. Opus One boosted the then fledgling Napa industry, adding a certain air of pedigree to the region.    The wines are now under the direction of Michael Silacci, produced as a Meritage blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. This “cult” wine is now in constant demand the world over, from American steak houses to private Japanese cellars.  Read less

Clearly not Opus' best vintage, but the name alone will mean high prices. I'd hold out for the '05.

I had this wine at a restaurant with lasagne - it was on the dry side, somewhat fruity but acidic

Having just read the biography of Robert Mondavi i was excited to try this. A softer attack than expected (sems to be the case with ultra high end CA wines). Intense deep fruits. Delicious, but OMG this is a powerful wine. Still young, hence the tight finish.

I have never had a negative Opus One experience. I bought this bottle at a great savings, at $140, so had it as our main bottle on New Year's Eve 2007. The Opus eclipsed everything else we drank. Smooth, luscious, flavorful and perfectly balanced, this wine truly had us holding the empty bottle upside down, shaking it for those last few drops. Exquisite bottle of wine.

Bordeaux-like in its structure and balance, showing cedary oak, dusty berry, dried currant and mineral, with hints of herb and sage. The flavors firm up on the finish, and this is rich and intense without being heavy. Needs decanting. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Best from 2009 through 2015. 22,000 cases made."

Weingut: Rothschild / MondaviLand: USARegion: KalifornienRebsorten: 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot, 1% Malbec, 4% Petit VerdotInhalt: 0,75 lAlkoholgehalt: 15 Vol.%Säuregehalt: 5,75 g/lRestsüße: trockenEmpfohlene Serviertemperatur: 16 - 18°CFassreife: in Barriques gereift (17 Monate)Lagerfähigkeit: 10 - 15 Jahre ab Jahrgang Rotwein > USA > Kalifornien

Wine Spectator ReviewJuly 2005 Barrel Tasting Excellent structure, tannins and acidity, with sturdy currant, blackberry, fresh earth, mineral and a whiff of tar and tobacco. A remarkably complex and impeccably balanced young wine that flexes its tannic muscle on the finish.Wine Tasting NotesShowing a lustrous dark ruby, the 2004 presents aromas of violets, cedar, black tea leaves, black pepper and brioche. A soft, creamy entry gives way to a concentrated mid-palate that expands in the mouth and lingers on the finish. Elements of cassis, toffee and cocoa round out the rich flavors of the wine. Intense fruit, bright acid and sturdy tannins promise resilience and longevity.
