Opus One Red Bordeaux Blend Napa Valley 1998

Winemaker's Notes:

Already slowed by El Niño’s winter flooding, the growing season of 1998 extended into late October, promoting a very long ripening period for Opus One’s grapes. Supple and lush, the 1998 Opus One shows an opaque purple color and intense aromas of blackberries, vanilla, and roasted espresso. The wine offers superb balance, a resilient middle body and a seamless texture.

The first few vintages, beginning in 1979, instantly created a luxury brand fetching prices upwards of $50, then considered the height of indulgence. They were produced by Mouton Rothschild winemaker Lucien Sionneau and Robert Mondavi’s son, Timothy. Opus One boosted the then fledgling Napa industry, adding a certain air of pedigree to the region.    The wines are now under the direction of Michael Silacci, produced as a Meritage blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. This “cult” wine is now in constant demand the world over, from American steak houses to private Japanese cellars.  Read less

What a wine Now only starting to show its real potential Opened up a bottle at the Maritim Hotel in Mauritius on 24/01/2011 Cork excellent Nose good bordeaux Colour typical of a wine of this age Tannis stil very good -- still good aging potential Initially to strong but with food this wine carried itself This is a typical example of a well structured wine made even with reservations about the vintages that with time will come to its full potential

Enjoyed an Opus One 1998 on 3 Nov, 2013. Excellent dimensions on the nose, balanced and still after 15 years, a lot of structure - cedar, oaky vanilla, anis, and a very long toasty anis taste. With time and the roasted duck we had, it smoothened out very nicely. Perhaps a bit more fruit or berry could have been there.

I had fun with this wine...Smooth, complex, dark berries, cherries, vanilla and earth...Superb finish, with sweeter than usual tannins.

A surprisingly feeble garnet/ruby color already displaying pink and amber hues is followed by a Medoc-like bouquet of cedar, plums, cherries, and spice box with hints of sweet oak as well as roasted peanuts. The wine is light to medium-bodied, with f... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. A Proprietary Blend wine from California in USA. 1998 Opus One Proprietary Red Wine 750ml
