Opus One Red Bordeaux Blend Napa Valley 1996

Winemaker's Notes:

A decreased berry set in May followedd by sunny days and warm July nights brought the smaller-than-average crop of 1996 to maturity in mid-September. Showing deep color, the wines are bold and concentrated, with supple texture, lush flavors, and a smooth, lingering finish.

The first few vintages, beginning in 1979, instantly created a luxury brand fetching prices upwards of $50, then considered the height of indulgence. They were produced by Mouton Rothschild winemaker Lucien Sionneau and Robert Mondavi’s son, Timothy. Opus One boosted the then fledgling Napa industry, adding a certain air of pedigree to the region.    The wines are now under the direction of Michael Silacci, produced as a Meritage blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. This “cult” wine is now in constant demand the world over, from American steak houses to private Japanese cellars.  Read less

Drank a bottle Xmas eve w family. Decanted for 3 hours and tasted great. Typical opus, great to get as a gift but not worth the money.

2010 may have been too long to shelve this for...didn't open up at all, vinegar-like flavor

Wonderful finesse and complexity. Not the up-front opulent flavor of the '94 or '95, but seemingly deeper, with more finesse to the toasty clove, currant, black cherry and spice... Wine Spectator. A Proprietary Blend wine from California in USA. 1996 Opus One Proprietary Red Wine 750ml

Wine Advocate ReviewRated 94This is one of the finest Opus Ones to date, offering a dark ruby/purple color, as well as a striking, intense bouquet of sweet licorice intermixed with blackberries, cassis, plums, and saddle leather. This seamless, full-bodied wine is more velvety-textured, opulent, and succulent than past vintages. The mid-palate is expansive and chewy. The long finish is filled with glycerin, ripe fruit, and sweet tannin. Drink this impressive, user-friendly yet richly concentrated effort over the next 15 years.
