Opus One Red Bordeaux Blend Napa Valley 1990

Winemaker's Notes:

Cooler-than-normal winter weather led to a late bud break. Bloom and berry set were affected by cool temperatures and rain in late May, resulting in a reduced crop. Normal summer temperatures were followed by ideal harvest conditions. Wines are aromatic, rich, and resilient.

The first few vintages, beginning in 1979, instantly created a luxury brand fetching prices upwards of $50, then considered the height of indulgence. They were produced by Mouton Rothschild winemaker Lucien Sionneau and Robert Mondavi’s son, Timothy. Opus One boosted the then fledgling Napa industry, adding a certain air of pedigree to the region.    The wines are now under the direction of Michael Silacci, produced as a Meritage blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. This “cult” wine is now in constant demand the world over, from American steak houses to private Japanese cellars.  Read less

What a dramatic wine. We recently shared this vintage with friends during a backyard dinner party. After the first sips, nobody spoke for several minutes. It's so complex no one knew what say. I love the dark fruit and vanilla spice on the tounge and lingering toasty finish.

This is a terrific Opus, with a broader, deeper palate and less of the overly-sculptured, structured feel that past examples have revealed. The 1990 exhibits a dark ruby/purple color, and a spicy, ri... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. A Proprietary Blend wine from California in USA. 1990 Opus One Proprietary Red Wine 750ml

Dramatic, with its ripe, rich, plush core of exotic currant, anise, cedar, vanilla and berry notes that are enormously complex on the finish. Delicious.--Opus One vertical. In a blind tasting, this wine did not fool many tasters when served blind. It was quickly identified as a California wine despite the fact that it is made in a Bordeaux-like style. The wine performed well, exhibiting a deep ruby/purple color, a lead ... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. A Proprietary Blend wine from California in USA. 1990 Opus One Proprietary Red Wine 750ml
