Opus One Red Bordeaux Blend Napa Valley 1987

Winemaker's Notes:

1987 followed the same early bud break pattern established in 1984. The growing season was dry, cook, and moderately long. An earlier-than-normal harvest yielded clean, well-balanced fruit. Showing great structure, the wines are generous and intense.

The first few vintages, beginning in 1979, instantly created a luxury brand fetching prices upwards of $50, then considered the height of indulgence. They were produced by Mouton Rothschild winemaker Lucien Sionneau and Robert Mondavi’s son, Timothy. Opus One boosted the then fledgling Napa industry, adding a certain air of pedigree to the region.    The wines are now under the direction of Michael Silacci, produced as a Meritage blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. This “cult” wine is now in constant demand the world over, from American steak houses to private Japanese cellars.  Read less

Extra facets and dimensions abound in this deeplycomplex and flavorful wine. Impressive for itsfocus and finesse, though there's an underlyingfirmness and authority in the core of chewycurrant, herb and anise flavors. Delicious.--Opus One vertical. D... Wine Spectator.
