Opus One Proprietary Red Napa Valley 2012

External Review by We Speak Wine:

After a warm and dry winter, generous rains returned in March just in time for bud-break and provided the water needed for the rest of the year. Mother Nature continued to favor the vintage with a superb growing season characterized by moderate temperatures and bountiful sunshine resulting in one of the valley’s most exceptional vintages. At harvest, the fruit exhibited the classic style of our Oakville estate vineyards with incredible depth of flavor, layers of complexity and excellent structure. Picking started on September 21st at the fresh fruit stage of ripeness to keep flavors bright and lively. Through careful and precise management of the incoming fruit, harvest continued evenly until it was completed on October 20th. The 2012 Opus One effuses fresh dark fruit aromas accentuated by subtler notes of forest-floor and graphite. The wine’s round mouthfeel and satiny tannins wrap around classic flavors of cassis, blackberry and black cherry. This refined and age-worthy wine simultaneously offers a long lingering finish, with lively acidity and a sturdy structure at the close. - Winery Varietals: 79% Cabernet Sauvignon 7% Cabernet Franc 6% Petit Verdot 6% Merlot 2% Malbec Skin Contact: 18 Days Barrel Aging: 18 Months in new French oak ** Only 2 in Stock **

The first few vintages, beginning in 1979, instantly created a luxury brand fetching prices upwards of $50, then considered the height of indulgence. They were produced by Mouton Rothschild winemaker Lucien Sionneau and Robert Mondavi’s son, Timothy. Opus One boosted the then fledgling Napa industry, adding a certain air of pedigree to the region.    The wines are now under the direction of Michael Silacci, produced as a Meritage blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. This “cult” wine is now in constant demand the world over, from American steak houses to private Japanese cellars.  Read less

Two of the strongest wines ever made at Opus One, the 2007 has terrific black currant fruit, licorice, incense, and subtle smoke, an opulent, even voluptuous mouthfeel, dazzling purity and texture, and a skyscraper-like mouthfeel. This is a sensational Opus One, with sweet tannin and impressive precision and depth. It can be drunk now or cellared for 25+ years Tight and firm, with a chewy edge to the dried currant, graphite, blackberry and mineral notes. Full-bodied and intense, without being weighty, this is well-structured with a complex, persistent finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Best from 2012 through 2022. 17,500 cases made. -JL Deep red-ruby. Very sexy, perfumed aromas of ripe black raspberry, roast coffee and flowers; there's a wildness here that I find compelling. Quite fresh and juicy in the mouth, but with a slightly exotic character to the dark berry, black cherry, smoky oak and bitter chocolate flavors. Not a fat style of 2007 but perfumed and energetic. Most impressive today on the firm, long finish, where substantial ripe tannins reach the front teeth. Built for a long evolution in bottle. I'd love to compare this against the 2006 in ten years. ** Only 6 in Stock **
