The first few vintages, beginning in 1979, instantly created a luxury brand fetching prices upwards of $50, then considered the height of indulgence. They were produced by Mouton Rothschild winemaker Lucien Sionneau and Robert Mondavi’s son, Timothy. Opus One boosted the then fledgling Napa industry, adding a certain air of pedigree to the region.    The wines are now under the direction of Michael Silacci, produced as a Meritage blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. This “cult” wine is now in constant demand the world over, from American steak houses to private Japanese cellars.  Read less

This blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc Petit Verdot Merlot and Malbec aged 17 months in French oak is a strong effort offering creme de cassis cedarwood white chocolate and spice box. It possesses a Bordeaux-like personality as one might expect since Opus One is owned by Baroness Philippe de Rothschild and the winemaking team comes primarily from Pauillac. The significant tannin in the wine provides a slight austerity but this is a full-bodied rich effort that ma

The 2003 Opus One comes across as a bit of a brute. Stylistically the 2003 is rich dark and quite powerful. The early signs of aromatic development suggest the 2003 won

A significant improvement over the superficial deficient 2000 Opus One the 2001 boasts a dark plum/ruby color as well as a clean (brett free) elegant restrained nose of plums black currants and anise. Medium-bodied with dry hard tannin and a short finish it is a pleasant Bordeaux-styled red to drink over the next decade. Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.

The 2001 Opus One bursts from the glass with layers of opulent fruit. Still quite youthful the 2011 impresses for its elegant mid-weight personality. Compared to the best wines of this era the 2001 comes across as a bit forward. I imagine the 2001 will drink well for another decade or so but it won

Scents of red currant red licorice wild berry sage and fresh earth fold together nicely in this ripe intense tightly wound young Cabernet. Well-focused deep and complex with dry earthy tannins on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Malbec Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2010. Tasted twice with consistent notes. 20 500 cases made. (JL) Wine Spectator.

While it is a big rich effort the 1999 Opus One exhibits a distinct earthiness as well as a sweaty saddle-like characteristic. It builds nicely on the attack and mid-palate but finishes short displaying hints of herbs chocolate and black currants. Drink this medium-bodied offering now and over the next 7-8 years... This is one of the finest Opus Ones to date offering a dark ruby/purple color as well as a striking intense bouquet of sweet licorice intermixed with blackberries cassis plums and saddle leather. This seamless full-bodied wine is more velvety-textured opulent and succulent than past vintages. The mid-palate is expansive and chewy. The long finish is filled with glycerin ripe fruit and sweet tannin. Drink this impressive user-friendly yet richly concentrated effort over the next 15 ye
