Opus One Napa Valley(1997)
Abundant sunlight in the previous vintage produced high fertility in the vine buds and a large crop, which Opus One thinned to the lowest per-acre yield in a decade. Harvest was early and very compact, comprising just 11 days. The wines combine vigor with finesse.

- First vintage to be made from as much as 90% estate fruit. Extensive sunlight in 1996 led to heavey fruit set and then crop thinning to lost in a decade. Rapid harvest spread over only 11 days. Cabernet Sauvignon 82%, Cabernet Franc 8%, Merlot 5%, Malbec 4%, Petit Verdot 1% Skin contact 32 days 18 months in new French oak 13.9% Exceptionally deep crimson. Very, very dense and introvert. Unforthcoming now, but very convincing. Extremely dense, velvety, and voluptuous. - Medium bright ruby. Slightly sauvage aromas of cassis, dark chocolate, meat, leather and black pepper. Stylish and sweet, with moderately dense, creamy flavors of raspberry, roast meat and tobacco. Rather sophisticated texture for California wine. I would have scored this wine higher were it not for its slightly drying tannins, which did not soften even as the middle palate grew increasingly silky with extended aeration.
