What to Expect

California's Napa Valley has been a source of world-class Cabernet Sauvignon for well over a century. Its warm climate and varied terrain allows for many styles of wine. One thread that runs through almost all the Cabernet based wines from Napa is their lush, ripe full-bodied feel and rich flavors of currant and berry. Wines from the valley floor, particularly around Rutherford, are famed for a dusty quality and those coming from the hillsides surrounding the valley, Mt. Veeder, Diamond Mountain and Howell Mountain for example, tend to be a little leaner with more obvious structural elements.

Wine Spectator ReviewBordeaux-like in structure, this is an impressive showing. Firm tannins wrap around the currant, black cherry, anise, spice and cedar notes. Long, persistent finish.Opus One vertical. Feb 29, 2000.

Rating: 16/20 - As reviewed by Jancis Robinson Early budbreak, even longer growing season than 1985. To-Kalon fruit still. Patrick Leon of Mouton in charge. Cabernet Sauvignon 87%, Cabernet Franc 9%, Merlot 4% Skin contact 21 days 18 months in new French oak 12.7% Slightly watery rim. Good depth of crimson with muddy orange rim. Still quite youthful. Some oak! Gentle cassis. Good texture. Interesting combination of Californian-style fruit and Bordeaux winemaking. Tannins still evident. Acidity increasing. A bit awkward and gawky.
