Opus One Napa 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

A very dry and unseasonably warm winter gave the vines an early start to the 2013 growing season and set in motion what would become an extraordinary vintage for Opus One. Flowering occurred under near-perfect conditions which led to excellent fruit set throughout our Oakville estate vineyards and ensured a bountiful harvest – though smaller than the previous year. Varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon 79%, Cabernet Franc 7%, Merlot 6%, Petit Verdot 6%, and Malbec 2% Skin Contact: 18 Days Barrel Aging: 17 1/2 Months in new French oak

The first few vintages, beginning in 1979, instantly created a luxury brand fetching prices upwards of $50, then considered the height of indulgence. They were produced by Mouton Rothschild winemaker Lucien Sionneau and Robert Mondavi’s son, Timothy. Opus One boosted the then fledgling Napa industry, adding a certain air of pedigree to the region.    The wines are now under the direction of Michael Silacci, produced as a Meritage blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. This “cult” wine is now in constant demand the world over, from American steak houses to private Japanese cellars.  Read less
