Onyx By Darling Cellars Chenin Blanc Noble Late Harvest 2008

External Review by Wine Gems @ Perriello's:

Darling, South AfricaOnyx Noble Late Harvest Chenin Blanc is an indulgent sweet wine gem from the Darling wine region of South Africa. Darling Cellars is situated on the cool west coast of South Africa, near Darling, about one hours drive from Cape Town and about 15km from the Atlantic coast. The Onyx range is the Jewel of Darling Cellars Crown, only the very best selection from the vintage. Onyx is a semi-precious stone that represents the dark granite bedrock so prevalent in the Groenkloof vineyard of Darling. Abe Beukes, winemaker since 1997, is often heard muttering that these vineyards are the best kept secret in the Cape. Its the perfect wine gem!Onyx Noble Late Harvest Chenin Blanc shows dried fruit flavors of apricots and peaches and a good concentration on the palate. It was made from bush vines of 80% Chenin Blanc and 20% Riesling grapes. 60% of the wine was fermented and aged for 4 months in French oak barrels. The sugar, acid and alcohol are well balanced and the wood maturation adds to the complexity and structure of this sweet wine. It tastes like an elixir of the gods! Enjoy Onyx Noble Late Harvest Chenin Blanc as a dessert in itself or with pannacotta, fruit tarts and dessert cheeses.

Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Coconut Rice Sweet Potato Cheesecake

RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.

Deep orange-gold. Exotic aromas of sultanas, honey, clove and orange marmalade. Rich and plump but with an edge of acidity.
