Leandro Vázquez, a Cuban and citizen of the world, when visiting Spain, decided to flee the American frenzy of big business and delve into the ancient tradition of vine-growing, but from the lavish though strict perspective of a château. When he bought the land it must have been love at first sight and so, with good taste and great care, the Torre de Oña SA winery was born. The emotion and enthusiasm involved in creating a winery was hindered by something a little more pedestrian, the day-to-day running, always difficult and risky. Finally, Leandro Vázquez decided to leave the business, a more than tempting legacy for those seeking new horizons in La Rioja. This situation coincided with the desire of La Rioja Alta, S.A. to complement its traditional style with a new wine, totally independent and different from the Haro sanctuary. Some changes were made after the purchase was completed in January, 1995, focused more on improving and enhancing what was already there than on changing the château philosophy and the modern and powerful wine initially produced by Barón de Oña, S.A. Spunky and lightly herbal up front, with exotic, lightweight aromas. Feels snappy, tight and lean in the mouth, with bouncy red plum and pie cherry flavors. Shows good juiciness, reasonably complex flavors and a dry, spicy finish.

From vines planted on the coast in San Antonio at the turn of the millennium, this wineandrsquo;s tart red fruit melds with earthy flavors. Itandrsquo;s a simple pinot noir thatandrsquo;s cool and easy to drink, with a mineral tone that takes it beyond mere fruitiness. For charcuterie.

Medium red. Attractively perfumed, displaying aromas of dried red fruits, spice cake and minerals, with a sexy floral overlay. Light-bodied, dry and precise, combined with understated strawberry and raspberry flavors and a subtle note of blood orange. Finishes with good breadth and lingering sweetness. This wineandrsquo;s light touch is pretty rare for a New World pinot and itandrsquo;s also an outstanding value.

The 2010 Ona Pinot Noir was aged in mostly French oak, 30% new, for 9 months. Medium ruby red in color, it exhibits an expressive nose of rose petal, spice box, cherry, and raspberry. Savory, ripe, and balanced with a velvety texture, it is an outstanding value meant for drinking over the next 5andndash;6 years. Fans of Pinot Noir should consider buying this by the case.
