Olivier Leflaive 'Les Setilles' Bourgogne 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Tight on the nose with tree bark and tar notes over faint lime and peach, with a gentle violet pastille top note. This is fairly rich for this bottling with acid that seems a touch soft, though it’s probably only in relation to the richness. Lots of apple and peach fruit here along with mineral and gentle oak notes. The finish was a bit steely and tight , not showing the fruit persistence one would have hoped for. This should improve a bit with additional time in bottle. 88pts

The Leflaive family has always had a few hectares of vines in Burgundy, in addition to their farm. Just after the First World War, Olivier’s grandfather, Joseph Leflaive was faced with the failure of his steel factory in Saint-Etienne. His investments in Burgundy were all he had left and he decided to enlarge his wine estate. It became a family-run operation covering some 35 hectares. His son, Joseph Régis, was in insurance and along with his brother Vincent, decided to take over the reins in 1953. The estate soon began producing top-flight wines, mainly due to the arrival of air conditioning in Puligny in the 1970s. This was a major step for winemakers in this village which sits two meters above the water table and as such, had no underground cellars. Read less

This is very floral on the nose, with tropical tones over lean lemon custard and tangelo fruit. Bright and well focused with good depth of flavor on a light frame. This is streamlined and sleek with gentle suggestions of pollen, fennel and maybe even a touch of rhubarb accenting the core of citrus fruit. Very fresh and vibrant in the mouth in a lovely, refreshing style. The finish shows some dusty apple character and is a bit shorter than expected. 88pts

Very oaky on the nose. Apricots and minerals on the tongue with a sour bitter finish. Not a huge fan of this one, but I tend to dislike the more oaky Chardonnays.

Warm golden apple, pear, carmel, with a citrusy finish and hint of oak. Some mushroomy earthiness balances it out. Has some good weight to it.

Drinking lovely right now (7/10). Good acid, lovely multi-dimensional fruit, a great value in white burgundy.

Light oak. A bit of a familiar "champagne-y" finish, which is pleasant. Notes of honey. Served with Chicken Marsala, 'tis perfection.

We had this wine with a meal that featured "chicken under a brick." The wine seemed to be a perfect complement.

Summary: Olivier Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc Les Setilles (family garden) has become one of the most popular items in the entire Frederick Wildman portfolio. Year in/ year out this wine represents impeccable quality and unsurpassed value in the French wine category. This wine exceeds expectations of even the most discriminating of palates. Terroir: Les Setilles is sourced from vineyards within the communes of Puligny Montrachet and Meursault, with each village representing roughly half of the final blend. Grapes are sourced from multiple plots within each village in an effort to maximize complexity of the final wine. Vinification: Vintage consistency is the goal with this wine so the blending of lots and aging technique will vary according. Roughly 60% of the wine is aged in Allier oak, only 10% of which is new. The remaining 40% of the wine is aged in stainless steel to preserve clean varietal character.

Beautifully rich and round, this ripe, apricot and pear flavored wine has a broad, creamy texture. With its fruit, it is ready to drink, but will improve 2017–2018.

A mix of floral and talcum powder aromas and flavors mark this delicate, well-cut white. Apple and lemon notes chime in. Drink now through 2016.

Nose of pineapple, honeysuckle and beeswax. Flavors of pineapple, dried apricot and minerals .

A blend from Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault, this is a soft rounded wine with white fruit acidity, almond flavors and a gentle lemon zest texture. Drink in the next two years.

A pleasant, lemon- and spice-tinged white, a little on the tart side, with a decent finish. Drink now.

Fresh and floral on the opening whiff supplemented by a bracing minerality. Bright citrus and lemon along with flashy acidity make for a pleasantly vibrant mouthfeel. The finish is thicker than the body would suggest woven through with citrus and earthy notes. Pair with turkey lobster or pasta with cream sauce.
