Olivier Leflaive Chassagne-Montrachet 2015

Member Review by ladyjane9:

Unlike the winemaker notes' description, I found this Chardonnay unremarkable, somewhat bland, and with little aroma. I have had less expensive wines from Olivier Leflaive and other Chardonnays with much more power and resonance.

The Leflaive family has always had a few hectares of vines in Burgundy, in addition to their farm. Just after the First World War, Olivier’s grandfather, Joseph Leflaive was faced with the failure of his steel factory in Saint-Etienne. His investments in Burgundy were all he had left and he decided to enlarge his wine estate. It became a family-run operation covering some 35 hectares. His son, Joseph Régis, was in insurance and along with his brother Vincent, decided to take over the reins in 1953. The estate soon began producing top-flight wines, mainly due to the arrival of air conditioning in Puligny in the 1970s. This was a major step for winemakers in this village which sits two meters above the water table and as such, had no underground cellars. Read less

A steely wine, its acidity dominating the attractive toast, white fruits and grapefruit flavors. It is rich, full in the mouth, a wine that shows some opulence while also preserving a firm, strict structure.

Montrachet is the most famous of the Chardonnays produced in the Candocirc;te de Beaune and is often called the andldquo;king of white wines.andrdquo; It is mature, complex and sophisticated, with depth and character, and can be aged for up to 20 years. This wine will only get better over time. It has a beautiful nose of honeysuckle and lemon zest, with flavors of melon, candied lemon and baked apple. Serve with pan seared scallops and potatoes au gratin.
