What to Expect

While Burgundy is renowned as the home of Pinot Noir, it is also the source for the ubiquitous Chardonnay grape. In these gently rolling hills Chardonnay achieves some of its most profound expressions. Appellations such as Meursault, Montrachet, and Corton Charlemagne proudly take their place among the most sought-after in all the world of wine. With a richness and complexity few wines can match, Chardonnay from Burgundy adds classic hints of flinty and chalky soil with nuances tones of nuts, cinnamon, honey and butter to the rich, sometimes unctuous but rarely heavy, ripe orchard fruits that the grapes are capable of providing. White Burgundy can improve in the bottle for decades and is arguably the most age-worthy dry white wine in the world.

Meursault is considered to be the capital of white wine as its combined vineyard area is the largest in the Cote de Beaune These vineyards are gently sloped between 750 and 850 feet in altitude and face east, which permits optimal exposure to the sun. The abundance of white marl in the soil gives the wines aromas of almonds and hazelnuts along with good structure.

There are many localities formed with the word Charmes, which in Burgundy means old communal cultivated fields allowed to lie fallow. Here, we prefer to talk about a charming, enjoyable wine. The soil is rich in clay which gives the wine its buttery flavor and fat. However, the limestone present in the soil again imparts subtle secondary aromas.

The greatest and finest of the Meursault 1er Crus. The explanation of the terroir is found in its name, Perrieres (pierres=stones). The stones are quite abundant and rough, spread about the terrain with relatively shallow topsoil. Sunshine is optimal due to its southeastern exposure and 20% grade. During ageing, it marries the complexity and roundness of Meursault with the elegance and the mineral qualities of Puligny-Montrachet.
