Nice syrah - and real. True to its varietal. At release this was a JAm bomb. 4 years after release the fruit receaded and the smoke and pepper emerged. Very dark and concentrated.
Tasted this wine on Jan 24, 2009. The nose showed complex notes of cigar smoke, coffee grounds, currants and dusty cocoa. More of the same on the palate with fleshy dark fruit and fine fruit tannins and with a touch of vanilla.. On the finish I felt that there was still acidity present and the smoke made a return appearance. I was very pleased that the alcohol did not take over completely here.

A Syrah wine from California in USA. 2003 Ojai Syrah White Hawk Vineyard 750ml
Ojai is recognized for truly fabulous Syrah bottlings of which White Hawk is perhaps the most remarkable. Owner Adam Tolmach avows that White Hawk is an internationally-styled Syrah, yet it is decidedly Santa Barbara at its best. Very large scaled, decadently rich and moath-coating with very fine grained tannins, this stunning Syrah is somehow controlled and balanced at the same time. Worth every bit of its "95" score by that celebrated critic!
