Ojai Syrah Santa Barbara County White Hawk 2005

Member Review by monty1:

Nice syrah - and real. True to its varietal. At release this was a JAm bomb. 4 years after release the fruit receaded and the smoke and pepper emerged. Very dark and concentrated.

The White Hawk Vineyard is planted on ancient sand dunes on the south facing slope of Cat Canyon, a side of the Los Alamos Valley in Santa Barbara County. It's 21 miles west of the Pacific and 2 miles north of Los Alamos and planted at 900 feet elevation. This region is recognized as a top producing wine region. Fog often embraces the small vineyard in the morning before gentle afternoon breezes chase it away to allow the sun's rays to slowly ripen the fruit. We custom farm using sustainable and primarily organic viticulture. The yields are miniscule and the berries intense with a strong core of acidity is complemented by elements of meat and blackberries. Although Chardonnay is also planted in this 75 acre vineyard, much of White Hawk's vineyard is planted with Syrah clone 1 on 5c rootstock or Syrah clone 6 on 140R rootstock. Fruit from White Hawk vineyard is shared with other prominent wineries including Ojai Vineyard, Andrew Murray Vineyards, Herman Story Wines, and Sine Qua Non. White Hawk vineyard fruit is also used by Longoria Winery, IO Winery, Clos Mimi Wines, Silver Winery, Ingersoll Wine, Royal Oak Winery, Rideau Vineyard, Paige 23 Wines, Sea Smoke Cellars, and Wild Horse Winery. Tasted this wine on Jan 24, 2009. The nose showed complex notes of cigar smoke, coffee grounds, currants and dusty cocoa. More of the same on the palate with fleshy dark fruit and fine fruit tannins and with a touch of vanilla.. On the finish I felt that there was still acidity present and the smoke made a return appearance. I was very pleased that the alcohol did not take over completely here.

The 2003 Syrah White Hawk Vineyard is intense. This wine, which comes from sandy soils, possesses an opaque blue/purple color, fabulous fruit concentration and density, a noble definition and sweetnes... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. A Syrah wine from California in USA. 2003 Ojai Syrah White Hawk Vineyard 750ml

Ojai is recognized for truly fabulous Syrah bottlings of which White Hawk is perhaps the most remarkable. Owner Adam Tolmach avows that White Hawk is an internationally-styled Syrah, yet it is decidedly Santa Barbara at its best. Very large scaled, decadently rich and moath-coating with very fine grained tannins, this stunning Syrah is somehow controlled and balanced at the same time. Worth every bit of its "95" score by that celebrated critic!
