Ojai Pinot Bien Nacido 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

Notes on the Ojai Pinot Noir Clos Pepe 2004 : WINE ADVOCATE REVIEW: 88 POINTS Stern and austere is the dark ruby 2005 Pinot Noir Clos Pepe. This cuvee exhibits sweet and sour cherries in its premier cru Cote de Beaune-like personality. With good freshness, tart acidity, and a clipped, slightly narrow finish, it should be consumed earlier rather than later as it should become increasingly desiccated. WA # , #172 (Aug 2007) Robert Parke CONNOISSEUR'S GUIDE REVIEW: 92 POINTS Smoky oak spice and suggestions of berries join the more conventional themes of well-ripened black-cherries in the deep and well-formed aromas of this very hedonistic Pinot Noir, and the wine's flavors show no let-up in richness with a fine interplay of plums, cherries, sweet oak and spice. A mouth-filling wine that is framed with a bit more than varietally typical tannins, it is built with an eye to real improvement with age and has the fruity stuffing and depth to grow increasingly better for five or more years. Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine Volume 31 Issue 8: June 2007OJAI PINOT NOIR CLOS PEPE 2004

The Ojai Vineyard, owned by Adam & Helen Tolmach, works closely with a dozen different vineyards on the Central Coast of California and produces wines from syrah, grenache, mourvedre, pinot noir, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and viognier. About 6000 cases are produced each year, divided between 15 bottlings, most of which are vineyard designated wines. The key to producing special wine is in the care taken growing the grapes. There is an inverse relationship between quantity and quality when it comes to grapes, so rather than purchasing ours by the ton, we have long term agreements with our growers to buy the fruit by the acre. This lets us culture the vines and thin the crop to our strict specifications, yet allows the grower to receive a fair return. In the winery we like to watch the development of the wine carefully, yet prefer to do as little as possible. Experience has shown us that the least amount of moving, pumping, fining and filtering is always best. The ultimate objective is to show off the distinctive character of a vineyard site. Read less

Tightly wound, intense and concentrated, with a complex mix of earthy cherry, wild berry, blueberry and spicy nutmeg notes. Tannins provide firm structure. The mineral and pebble flavors join the rich fruit on the finish. Best from 2007 through 2011.... Wine Spectator. Ojai works with vineyards along the Central Coast to produce wines from a diversity of grape varieties. Owner Adam Tolmach believes that "most people are sick of the McDonaldization of every product", and he endeavors to make wines of character from low yields and minimal intervention. Simply put, Clos Pepe is a voluptuous example of Pinot with a suppleness and richness that make it irresistible right now! It has earned a "91" rating from the top U.S. critic.
