Oddero Barolo Villero 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2006 Barolo Villero is less expressive and more closed in on itself than the Rocche, but that is to be expected. Sensual dark spices, menthol, minerals, black cherries and plums come together beautifully in this firm, old-style Barolo. The finish boasts considerable power and richness. Patience is the key, but the future certainly seems bright for the Villero. Anticipated maturity: 2021-2036. Oddero can be hit and miss, but when the wines are on – as they increasingly are – they merit considerable attention. This is a very strong set of new releases from one of Piedmont’s historic properties.

Just as in the past, only grapes from family-owned vineyards are used to make Oddero wines. “Poderi e Cantine Oddero” (Oddero Estate and Winery) is a historic name among Barolo producers. Run for generations by men, it is now in the hands of Mariacristina and Mariavittoria, the daughters of Giacomo Oddero, Barolo patriarch and a man whose fame reaches beyond the Langhe. The company dedicates its full attention to the winemaking process, blending ancient wisdom and modern production techniques with patience and tenacity: from the pruning of the vines to the pressing of the grapes, up to the ageing of selected vintages. Oddero vines grow in some of the best and sunniest sites (known as sôri) on the hills in the Barolo and Barbaresco zones and beyond. Read less
