Oddero Barolo Brunate 2008

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Cool and composed on the nose and full of white soil tones, dried herb, a little white pepper, salty minerality and a little cocoa, topped with subtle hints of wild mint. This has a bit of a soft entry, with early acid and tannins that arrive late on the palate and seem to be very sweet, accenting a nice lingonberry/wild raspberry tone. There’s a hint of black fruit on the transition to the finish, which is tight and firm and built on tannins. These again show a wonderful ripeness and a lovely, tangy sour raspberry finale. 92pts

Our winery is nestled in the Langhe hills, overlooking a sea of vines. Just as in the past, only grapes from family-owned vineyards are used to make Oddero wines. “Poderi e Cantine Oddero” (Oddero Estate and Winery) is a historic name among Barolo producers. Run for generations by men, it is now in the hands of Mariacristina and Mariavittoria, the daughters of Giacomo Oddero, Barolo patriarch and a man whose fame reaches beyond the Langhe. The company dedicates its full attention to the winemaking process, blending ancient wisdom and modern production techniques with patience and tenacity: from the pruning of the vines to the pressing of the grapes, up to the ageing of selected vintages. Oddero vines grow in some of the best and sunniest sites (known as sôri) on the hills in the Barolo and Barbaresco zones and beyond. Read less

Fresh if perhaps slightly fudgy on the nose which shows lots of ripe fresh fruit, a little smoky accent and a tight slightly vegetal floral topnote with lots of incipient tobacco character. In the mouth this is very fresh and a little tight, with good acids and nice abundant but ripe tannins supporting deep fresh if dark berry fruit, almost a little. Boysenberry. This finishes with power and depth delivering clean and bright fruit with excellent soil tone accents. A very complete wine. 93pts
