Oddero Barolo 2006

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Herbal, high toned, hint of caramel, malty, Smithfield ham, milkyway, lovely entry, cool if a bit compressed, mouthfilling yet fresh and light, dark fruit flavors, muscular, deep inner mouth perfumes of dried herbs, seeds, and fading spice, lovely intensity with burnished cherry fruit lurking, spicy finish, rich licorice tones

Our winery is nestled in the Langhe hills, overlooking a sea of vines. Just as in the past, only grapes from family-owned vineyards are used to make Oddero wines. “Poderi e Cantine Oddero” (Oddero Estate and Winery) is a historic name among Barolo producers. Run for generations by men, it is now in the hands of Mariacristina and Mariavittoria, the daughters of Giacomo Oddero, Barolo patriarch and a man whose fame reaches beyond the Langhe. The company dedicates its full attention to the winemaking process, blending ancient wisdom and modern production techniques with patience and tenacity: from the pruning of the vines to the pressing of the grapes, up to the ageing of selected vintages. Oddero vines grow in some of the best and sunniest sites (known as sôri) on the hills in the Barolo and Barbaresco zones and beyond. Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Coconut Rice Sweet Potato Cheesecake

RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.

Lovely bright nose, melon, cool red fruits, fresh wild flowers, shoe store leather, bologna, flat entry, soft, needs acid, soft, plush tannins, coffee freshly roasted on the palate, dark fruit, nice bitter herb vein runs through it, rich, powerful, and perhaps just youthful, but a bit soft,

WS 91pts. - According to the Wine Spectator: Reticent, with a cloak of tannins descending upon the cherry, tar and menthol flavors. This is fresh and elegant, featuring everything in the right proportion, but just needs time to integrate and soften. There's a long, licorice-tinged finish. Best from 2014 through 2035. 800 cases imported. Winemaker Notes - Oddero's Barolo is made from nebbiolo sourced from two vineyards, Santa Maria Bricco Chiesa in La Morra and Bricco Fiasco in Castiglione Falleto. Run for generations by men, it is now in the hands of Mariacristina and Mariavittoria, the daughters of Giacomo Oddero, Barolo patriarch and a man whose fame reaches beyond the Langhe. This wine, from the excellent 2004 vintage, is typical of Oddero's best Barolo; traditionally-styled with more roses than tar and, as is the case with many wines from La Morra, plenty of ripe, supple tannin. Unmistakeable bouquet, very pleasant, intense yet ethereal, very persistent, at times spiced...

This straight bottling of Oddero Barolo comes from their younger Nebbiolo vines. The fruit is nonetheless incredibly expressive, and surely has enough substance for a long cellaring.

The 2006 Barolo Villero is less expressive and more closed in on itself than the Rocche, but that is to be expected. Sensual dark spices, menthol, minerals, black cherries and plums come together beautifully in this firm, old-style Barolo. The finish... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. A Nebbiolo wine from Piedmont in Italy. 2006 Oddero Barolo Villero 750ml
