Oddero Barbera di Alba 2006

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Sweet and sour fruits on the nose are uncomplicated yet pure and bright. The classic Barbera acidity keeps this bright and zesty on the palate as well with a clear, slightly bitter black cherry tone and nice accents of tar, earth and violet than add nice length on the finish. 88pts

Our winery is nestled in the Langhe hills, overlooking a sea of vines. Just as in the past, only grapes from family-owned vineyards are used to make Oddero wines. “Poderi e Cantine Oddero” (Oddero Estate and Winery) is a historic name among Barolo producers. Run for generations by men, it is now in the hands of Mariacristina and Mariavittoria, the daughters of Giacomo Oddero, Barolo patriarch and a man whose fame reaches beyond the Langhe. The company dedicates its full attention to the winemaking process, blending ancient wisdom and modern production techniques with patience and tenacity: from the pruning of the vines to the pressing of the grapes, up to the ageing of selected vintages. Oddero vines grow in some of the best and sunniest sites (known as sôri) on the hills in the Barolo and Barbaresco zones and beyond. Read less

A blend of fruit from Castiglione Falleto and La Morra 15-20 day fermentation and maceration 70% is aged in big, neutral wood 1 month in bottle The nose is greeted with Slavonian oak tones joined my meaty notes and red plum skins over a dry soil base. A touch rustic yet with good complexity and depth 2+ Softish acidity creates an opulent and broad mouthfeel that is well balanced but lacks a bit of definition 2 A bit closed still with lightly floral inner mouth perfume and notes of red apple skins and plum skin. 2 Finishes with a touch more acidic support yet still round, subtle notes on the finish reveal excellent potential for improvement in the bottle 2 87pts

Iodine and iron on the nose - very metallic, yet rustic. Rich and well balanced. Good acidity, and worked well with braised steak, but not too searing. Nice flavors of black cherry. Surprisingly complex and brooding for a wine of this price. Recommended

Barbera is known for its racy acidity, its rusticity, its earthiness, and its need to be accompanied by food. So reach for the nearest plate of grilled wild mushrooms or gamey meats and get ready to fall in love with this gorgeous, classically structured Barbera.
