Obsidian Ridge Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Obsidian Ridge Vineyard Red Hills Lake County 2014

Member Review by Stallion:

A decent mid weight Cabernet from the higher elevations of Red Hills. I actually expected a bit more structure from this wine....especially since all the reading I've done on the "high altitude cabernets".....and how they are more intense in the flavor dept. But all in all a decent Cabernet form a vineyard with a whole lot of volcanic rock in the soil. Cheers!

Obsidian Vineyard nestles in the coastal hills of the Onetangi viticultural area on the northern coast of Waiheke Island. The flagship wine, simply labeled The Obsidian, is the blend of the very best Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. The Weeping Sands label is made with the same meticulous care and attention as Obsidian, but for earlier drinking. All wines are from the single Waiheke Island vineyard except the Obsidian, Chardonnay which is sourced from a small family vineyard block on Waiheke Island overlooking the Tamaki Straight. The Obsidian vineyard was established in 1993 with the specific objective of producing a great Bordeaux-style red however since that time new varieties have been introduced and Obsidian now has eight varietal wines. New wines to its portfolio include Syrah, Viognier, Chardonnay, Rose and Montepulciano. Read less

Wow ~ FInd this wine and buy a case! I had the pleasure of trying it at a 20+ bottle tasting last evening and it tied as my favorite wine. (Tied with Quintessa '06 at $135 a bottle.) VERY good QPR - definitely worth $30. So, as I said - find it, buy it, enjoy it!. In the glass the color was quite dense and dark - crimson. Aromatically beautiful - hints of anisette and plum. Upon tasting - HUGE "ahhhhh" factor; very round in the mouth, black cherries and plum, seemed a hint of cinnamon with a nice, very light touch of oak/vanilla, followed by a kiss of minerality on the back end. I LOVED this wine; it was an elegant balance of fruit and tannins, softness and structure. This wine would be terrific with many different dishes, but I think it would thrill you all on its own!

This is an excellent, single vineyard, hillside Cabernet that's well worth the money. Opaque, all dark berries and cherries, chewy, strong from nose to 30 second finish. Honest, if this said Napa Valley rather than Lake County on the label, it'd sell for $40-50, and sell well at that!

Red Hills Lake County, CaliforniaObsidian Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon is an estate-grown mountain Cab from Obsidian Ridge Vineyard, planted at 2,640 feet atop the Mayacamas range north of Napa Valley on the ridge separating Alexander Valley and Clear Lake. Red Hills Lake County is one of the newest American Viticultural Areas, named for its defining volcanic soils. The 105-acre Obsidian Ridge Vineyard is named for the obsidian rock that shoots through the red soils of this steep, sloping terroir. It produces wines with great tannic structure. The owner of Obsidian Ridge as well as Molnar Family and Kazmer & Blaise wines is Tricycle Wine Company, whose principals are Arpad and Peter Molnar and Michael Terrien. Their thoughts on winemaking are compelling: "Our winemaking philosophy is to do right by the land, and make wines of place through minimal intervention and through respect for the flavor of the Californian grapes and the Hungarian oak. Our wines speak clearly of their origins." This is a true red wine gem!In a Wall Street Journal story October 26, 2012 about the rising stock of Lake County wines, Lettie Teague singled out the 2009 Obsidian Ridge Cab. "Marked by dark fruit, currant and tobacco, it's intense and impressiveone of the best Cabernets I tasted on my visit."Obsidian Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend from four select blocks from the Obsidian Ridge Vineyard and a small percentage of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot from a small block at the top of the vineyard. The wine is an elegant, aromatic expression of Cabernet Sauvignon with the dark red color of a mountain Cab. Its bouquet includes spices of bay, clove and anise on a core of cherries, cranberries and red plums. Rich, full-bodied and densely structured, it offers flavors of dark cherries, espresso beans and chocolate. The wine was aged for 18 months in the winery's signature Kadar Hungary oak barrels, 50% new. It will age for 10-15 years but is already hard to resist! The finish is long and alluring.Enjoy Obsidian Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon with filet mignon, rack of lamb, venison, moussaka and aged cheeses.

This rich example of high-altitude Cabernet Sauvignon begins with intense aromas of wild blackberries and ripe red plums. Hints of roasted coffee, cinnamon sugar cookies and clove add to the bouquet.

Winemaker Notes - This rich example of high-altitude Cabernet Sauvignon begins with intense aromas of wild blackberries and ripe red plums. Hints of roasted coffee, cinnamon sugar cookies and clove add to the bouquet. The palate is warm and inviting with notes of dried cherries, fresh blackberries and dark chocolate. These generous flavors linger with dusty spiciness, and the wine is supported by bold tannins that suggest this wine will develop gracefully in the cellar for over the next five to ten years.

The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Hills exhibits minty, black currant fruit intermixed with hints of crushed rocks, spice and sweet tannin. It is an elegant, nicely-endowed, mid-weight Cabernet Sauvignon to drink over the next 7-8 years.

Rating: 91/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the August 2010 issue. Mixing sturdiness with ripeness and coming out a winner because it goes from strength to strength with deep and outgoing character that starts with tight yet keenly focused first aromas of cassis, black olive and ripe cherries and follows on the palate with equally deep yet still nascent flavors. It is not a wine for the faint of heart, yet it has depth and good varietal focus and is not over the top in any dimension. It has the pieces for growth in the bottle over the next four to five years.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Cellar for future drinking. Wine will improve with bottle aging.
