Obsidian Vineyard nestles in the coastal hills of the Onetangi viticultural area on the northern coast of Waiheke Island. The flagship wine, simply labeled The Obsidian, is the blend of the very best Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. The Weeping Sands label is made with the same meticulous care and attention as Obsidian, but for earlier drinking. All wines are from the single Waiheke Island vineyard except the Obsidian, Chardonnay which is sourced from a small family vineyard block on Waiheke Island overlooking the Tamaki Straight. The Obsidian vineyard was established in 1993 with the specific objective of producing a great Bordeaux-style red however since that time new varieties have been introduced and Obsidian now has eight varietal wines. New wines to its portfolio include Syrah, Viognier, Chardonnay, Rose and Montepulciano. Read less

Slightly dusty and herbal on the nose, this Cabernet Sauvignon shows a wonderful similarity to classic Bordeaux blends from great vintages. These refined aromas are a prelude to the sildy feast of ripe plums and black cherry flavors that fan out across the palate. A soft touch of vanilla adds to the allure of this polished offering. The unique vintage conditions helped shape what may be our most balanced vintage yet. - WineryBlend:98% Cabernet Sauvignon1% Cabernet Franc1% Petit VerdotpH: 3.83TA: 5.9 g/LAlc: 14.5%

The aroma of this wine reminds one of a blackberry patch at the end of summer. The warmth of the ripe fruit aromas is complimented with generous notes of nutmeg, vanilla and clove. The wine is soft at entry then expands on the palate with weight and generous structure. Brown sugar compliments the black fruit flavors, making the wine rich and inviting. - WineryBLEND:96% Cabernet Sauvignon2% Cabernet Franc2% SyrahAlcohol: 13.6%pH: 3.97Titratable Acidity: 5.4 g/L

Vintage: 2009 01/18/2013

If you're used to soft, ripe Napa Valley Cabernet, this one, grown just over the Lake County border, will strike you as dry and unyielding. The tannins are pronounced, giving it a hard bite. But it's rich and deep in crème de cassis, the sort of wine that seems ageworthy. Take a gamble and put it in your cellar for 6-8 years. Notable for its savory herb and dried berry flavors, this is a firm, complex, tightly wound youngster built with chewy tannins. Needs a little time or a healthy decant. Best from 2013 through 2022. 6,763 cases made. -JL
