As a third-generation winemaker and Napa Valley native, Rob Mondavi, Jr. has always understood that the region is uniquely suited for growing classic Bordeaux varieties. With the Oberon label - originally named for the eponymous king in Shakespeare's winsome comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream - he has created high-quality Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc to be enjoyed every day. Rob and fellow winemaker, Tony Coltrin, select Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc grapes from some of Napa Valley's finest vineyards in Oakville, Rutherford, Stags Leap and other emerging sub-appellations. The climate of these regions - warm days and cool evenings - yields grapes with the perfect balance of ripe fruit flavors and natural acidity. Oberon Cabernet Sauvignon is a classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, with deep, rich color and concentrated black fruit character. Oberon Merlot is wonderfully complex, with notes of blueberry and chocolate - perfect for enjoying around the hearth on cozy winter evenings. A little firm and meaty on the nose with very tight notes of eucalyptus, tobacco, bitter chocolate, violet and black pepper over hints of black currant. This is really very tight but you can see the fine balance here as this is already seamless with subtle complexity in the mouth. Everything is a bit low key but present with fine blackberry and plum fruit streaked with chocolate, vanilla and gently herbal spices. Air allows the wine to begin to release some attractively floral and spicy inner mouth perfumes that ride over the fruit on the moderately long, succulent finish which shows some blueberry and spiced plum notes. This needs plenty of air or another year in the bottle, but has everything it needs in a fairly refined package. 90pts

Tannic. More Europen in style and on the nose. A bit too much in the oak for more tastes. This was also the case with the 2009. It did open up nicely after about an hour. Cheers!

Rather sweeter than expected and very tight. Definitely benefits from some decanting. Long finish and clean berry flavors. There are other cabs out there for less $$ that taste as good. Perhaps another year in the cellar might make it stand out.

Bright and sweet red fruit flavors, shooting through from the nose to the finish. It's a bit on the sweet side for a dry wine, full of cherries. Not my thing but it's definitely some people's thing.

Juicy jammy berry fruit with some rustic characteristics. Really delicious with a big steak dinner. Very smooth and yummy

A bouquet of rich berries attacks the nose with a spicy undertone of cherry pit...almost jolly rancher like but very pleasant in the mouth with an explosions of bright fruit and balanced tannins.

Good, but a little on the European style if I dare say it. This opened with a very earthy smell and taste to some extent. Not very indicitave of a Napa Cabernet. All in all it was a good wine. I'm going to decant the next 2009 for a few hours after I open it. Cheers!

How can you go wrong with one? From the Micheal Mondavi Family, Oberon is the work of fourth generation winemaker, Robert Mondavi Jr. in cooperation with Napa Valley veteran winemaker Tony Coltrin. Grapes come from Rutherford, Oak Knoll, Wooden Valley and their own Oso Vineyard in Pope Valley. The blend is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot and other red varieties make up the last 6%. It's all aged up to 18 months in 47% new French oak. There's an ultra-ripe fruit character that makes the wine remarkable forward and lush. Wine Enthusiast Magazine picked the 2009 as a Best Napa Cab Under $30 and this 2010 was rated 90 points by Robert Parker who said "Another winner is the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon. Composed of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon blended with other Bordeaux varietals, it offers up notes of black currants, vanilla, tobacco leaf, cedar and spice box. Ripe, rich and medium-bodied, with loads of fruit and a heady finish, it can be enjoyed over the next 3-4 years."
