Nyetimber Vineyard Blanc de Blancs 1996

*UKVA and IWSC Wine of the Year 2004* Nyetimber Vineyard pioneered the UK's recent rise to fame and recognition for its ability to be taken seriously at international level. The estate was conceived, planted and equipped exclusively for the production of top-quality sparkling wines. Just over fourteen hectares (thirty-five acres) of gentle, south-facing slopes of greensand soil were planted with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, the classic varieties of the Champagne region. Literally translated as the ‘white of whites’, this finest style of sparkling wine is produced purely from Chardonnay grapes. In Champagne, Blanc de Blancs wines are traditionally considered the premium wines from a house due to their greatest ageing potential. Nyetimber wines are no exception to this and over the years have won many accolades since the first vintage in 1992. With very careful cellar management by the winemakers, we are proud to be able to offer a range of vintages of Blanc de Blancs. These wines are similarly produced by the traditional method but it is the length of time that they remain in contact with the yeast lees in the bottle that allows the gradual development of the hallmark characteristics of creamy vanilla, toast and roasted nuts. The nose shows powerful flavours of lemon and baked apple, jasmine, butter and vanilla with hints of caramel and marzipan. The palate is clean fresh green apple entry quickly followed by classic Chardonnay characters of baked lemon and minerals. The mousse is soft and gives a lovely delicacy to the wine. The long finish is buttery and toasty - this is a sophisticated and elegant wine.
