Nyetimber Classic Cuvée 2001

Winemaker's Notes:

Nyetimber Vineyard pioneered the UK's recent rise to fame and recognition for its ability to be taken seriously at international level. The estate was conceived, planted and equipped exclusively for the production of top-quality sparkling wines. Just over fourteen hectares (thirty-five acres) of gentle, south-facing slopes of greensand soil were planted with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, the classic varieties of the Champagne region. The appearance of the Classic Cuvée is a pale lemon yellow, persistent fine beaded mousse. The nose is very expressive, with aromas of honey, hazelnut, almond, marmalade, biscuity with lemon, floral and subtle toasty notes underneath. The palate is medium to full bodied, with mature honey and toast aromas, plus lime undertones. Attractive mouthfeel with rich and yet delicate mousse that progresses nicely towards mineral and slate-like flavourson the finish. Good balance, intensity, length and complexity all point towards a promising future

A new era for English wine began in 1988 when the first Nyetimber vineyards were planted in the heart of West Sussex. The aim – to make premium sparkling wine that would rival Champagne. That aim has been fully realised, and over the years the wines have attracted international acclaim and set a high benchmark for premium sparkling wines the world over. Now the largest vineyard in the UK, the Nyetimber Estate comprises 350 acres under vine and it is the fusion of expertise in the vineyard together with highly skilled winemaking that sets the wines apart. Also unique in the UK, Nyetimber is the only producer to make premium sparkling wine exclusively from estate grown fruit, thus ensuring complete control at every stage of the process. Classic Cuvée is the signature style from Nyetimber and is a blend of white Chardonnay fruit and Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, both black grapes. Vintage dated each year, our winemakers draw upon this palette of base wines to create a wine of structure and complexity through the exacting process of 'assemblage', or blending Read less

Yeasty bread nose and a deeply savoury spicy palate. Naming the fruit eluded for a while but think quince comes closest. Full in the mouth, a long finish. This might even tempt me away from my beloved Pol occasionally.

A wonderful 'champagne', apples on the nose, good acidity, quite a bit of yeast...dry finish...
