What to Expect

Most famous as the predominant grape in the blended wines of Rioja, Tempranillo has emerged as a potential star in regions as disparate as Australia and California. Tempranillo generally produces medium-bodied wines with juicy acidity and bright raspberry fruit enlivened by notes of dusty earth, dry herbs and leather. Tempranillo is often blended with Grenache, Graciano, and Mazuelo (aka Carignan) in the production of red wine from the Rioja region of Spain.

Winemakers Notes

Termes shows Toro's quintessential fruit: Ripe but fresh, with velvety texture and lively structure, this wine leaves a general impression of balance and elegance.

Rating: 18/20 - As reviewed by Jancis Robinson Much more complete nose than the Numanthia 2001. Very seductive and gorgeous. Fine tannins only, and at the very end. Painful, but well managed. Still slightly floral. Disguises alcohol and almost tastes cool. Could drink now.

Purplish crimson. Very, very sweet and floral nose. Almost over the top. Great whack of sweet fruit is followed by peppery oak corset. Still very young and awkward. Lots of acidity and tannin. Velvet start, but metal wool finish.

Rating: 93/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 122, September/October 2005 ($193) Bright ruby-red. Cassis, strawberry and spicy oak on the slightly reduced nose. Broad, rich, thick and fat but with solid underlying backbone. Quite closed in on itself today and in need of either extended aeration or several years in the cellar. Best on the very long, spicy finish, which features molar-dusting tannins. This vineyard was planted with ungrafted vines during the second half of the 19th century. .
