Extraordinaire wine. You will never guess a 15% of alcohol, as the aromatic and taste qualities are quite equilibrated. Take a zip and everything will turn numanthian around you. Quite explosive taste with a liturgical ending. Well-balanced flavors of spice, berries, chocolate, tobacco and minerals. Over the top quality and great value. During a blind tasting, Numanthia came second to a Mexican wine. Even though I'm Mexican, I believe this is a result of the complex taste of Numanthia. It ain't a wine for the ordinaire palate.
Brilliant Purple in color with rich aromas of blueberries, violets and new leather rising from the glass. Comes off as rich yet elegant but with an animal hint to it that really tempts you to take that first sip. First impression in the mouth is of black currant and vanilla but then as it hits your mid palate it explodes with ripe raspberry fruit and an earthy minerality that leaves you feeling refreshed. The finish is super long and reminiscent of the raspberry fruit on the mid-palate. This wine is a conundrum. Pleasing in so many ways and on so many levels.
I've been drowning in Spanish reds lately and honestly, I wasn't super excited about this bottle. I find so many Toro wines big and hot and needing age, but was pleasantly surprised with Termes. This is a manly wine - not in the "big overwhelming and power" way, but in these very masculine flavors. The leather, tobacco, cedar, dark fruit, and a hint of menthol (and I swear a purple floral note). It's a very masculine nose. On the palate it has a lot of everything. Acidity is good, tannins are good but smooth.
This is a big wine (and I am not talking about the uber-heavy glass they used for the bottle). It's 100% Tempranillo from Toro. I need to drink another bottle of this to really appreciate it. It is a lot more complex than most of the Tempranillos I have drunk. Spicy. Black fruit. Great structure. This is a wine for big, winter food.

The Spaniards of the region call it Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo). Hailing from Valdefinas, in the Toro region of Spain this wine has full, muscular body and a viscosity that complements its creamy texture. Dark purple rose in color and weaving aromas of black currants, violets, licorice and caramel. The bouquet blends into a palate of plums and dark chocolate, combining to create a soft but supple wine with a long dusty finish... very well balanced tannins & acidity. I agree with some of the other posts about it's masculine characteristics... I'll call it "handsome".

A Tempranillo wine from Toro in Spain. 2006 Bodega Numanthia Termes Numanthia 750ml
The 2005 Termes was just named #2 Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator. Sadly it's no longer available. This is the last of the 2006 so don't miss it. In the middle ages Toro wines were enjoyed all over Spain and beyond. Reestablished in 1933 the Toro D.O. currently has 14,000 acres planted, but Numanthia Estate has single handedly put Spain’s Toro region back on the map, by producing award winning wines celebrated world wide, that have reached Icon status. Bodegas Numathia was founded in 1998 when the Eguren family purchased vineyards with some of the oldest vines in the region and focused on creating the absolute best Toro wines possible. These vineyards have un-grafted pre-phylloxera vines up to 120 years old. The high altitude (2,000 feet) of the vineyards offers extremely favorable conditions for the grapes to mature and develop. The yields from these vines are some of the lowest in Europe averaging less that 1 ton per acre. The Tinta de Toro grape which is a clone of Tempranillo, is very dark in color, especially these very concentrated old vines grapes, so the wine shows deep color and rich extraction. This 2006 Termes is made from grapes from vines averaging 30 year old. After a slow maceration the wine is put in one-year-old French oak barrels for 16 months of aging. It shows incredible complexity and strength. Wine Spectator recently scored it 93 points and said: “Muscular yet expressive, this red offers roasted plum, bitter chocolate, tobacco and hot stone notes. Dark ruby. Ripe cherry and plum aromas are complicated by espresso and dark chocolate. Powerful, densely packed dark berry flavors are distinctly ripe, with chewy tannins adding structure. And yet this is surprisingly light on its feet, finishing with gentle acid lift and brighter red berry character.
