Nugan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Riverina Visión 2008

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

Hot climate, riper fruit. I liked this very much. It is not your typical Cabernet - the fruit is sweeter and the tannins are very soft. A great starter Cab.

Originally from Valencia, Spain, the Nugan Family is known more for their exceptional produce than for their wine. That having been said, this could well be the very best under-$10.00 Cabernet I have ever tasted from Australia. With a burst of black fruits that just won't quit, the long, full finish is met with just the perfect dose of vanilla. Of course, any winemaker will tell you that exceptional fruit is the single most important factor for making a great wine.

Cedar and cassis come together nicely in this easy-drinking Cabernet. It's a bit warm, with tannins supple enough for tonight, but manages to linger for a good long time on the finish.

New world in style, focusing on purity of fruit and an enveloping softness of sweet tannin. Multiple layers of currants and blackberries are woven among undertones of chocolate and hints of spicy black pepper displaying all the complexity usually found in wine hovering around the $25-35 mark. It is long, well balanced and thanks to the screwcap closure, consistent and rewarding.

The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon was fermented in American oak and aged for 12 months in new and used French oak. Purple-colored, it exhibits a nose of cedar, tobacco, cassis and black currants. Medium-bodied and forward in the mouth, the wine is nicely balanced and friendly. Drink it over the next 3-4 years.

Ripe in flavor and refined in structure, with a fine veil of tannins around a supple core of blackberry and ripe currant fruit, weaving a savory note through the finish. Drink now through 2011.

Bright ruby. Ripe cassis and mulberry scents are complemented by clove, nutmeg and cola; lots going on here. Cherry-cola and dark berry flavors are brightened by cracked pepper and baking spices, with gentle tannins adding grip. Finishes with mounting sweetness and excellent cling. This is an outstanding value.
