Norton la Colonia Torrentés 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

In 1885, the Buenos Aires to Mendoza railway opened, cementing the significance of this emerging wine-growing region high in the Andean foothills. Ten years later, Edmund Norton planted the first vines in Mendoza’s Luján de Cuyo district. At 900-1100 metres, the altitude moderates the temperature, causing an extended ripening season, and also expose the vines to more ultraviolet light, which encourages the development of colour and tannin in the black-skinned varieties. The result is whites packed with vibrant flavour and good natural acidity, and well-structured, food-friendly reds. Vineyard Norton has 680 hectares of vineyard in production, minutely mapped and divided into parcels so that the individual varieties, clones and training methods suit the soil in each. Minimal treatments are used in the vineyards, which are run along virtually organic lines. All the grapes are hand picked. The juice was fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel for fourteen days; temperature was held at 16-18°C. The wine was bottled early to maximize freshness and varietal expression. This is a sophisticated, dry, elegant rendition of this aromatic grape variety, combining minerality with white peach and floral notes such as rose and jasmine.

At Norton Winery, we are convinced that wine is born in the vineyard, that is the reason why, the experience and professionalism of our agriculturist engineer and enologist combine in our wines, jointly with the knowledge of our people and their hand-craft spirit, together with state-of-the-art technology. Our vineyards produce a wide range of noble grape varieties, such as Malbec and Torrontés. Red varieties include Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Barbera, Sangiovese, Syrah and Pinot Noir. White varieties include Torrontés, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillón, Chenin Blanc and Riesling. After the work executed throughout the whole year on the farms, there comes the time for harvesting. The grapes selected reach the Winery where a series of hand-craft stages take place, resulting in the delicate wine we enjoy. Visits by appointment. Read less
