Northstar Syrah Walla Walla Valley 2009

Member Review by kujolorenth:

"Lush and elegant, with aromas and flavors of earth, black fruit, vanilla, and dark chocolate leading into a long, smokey finish. This Syrah is a perfect expression of the Walla Walla Valley. Enjoy with BBQ and roasted game!" -David "Merf" Merfeld, Winemaker

Combining the art of old world wine-making with new world innovation to create Merlots that can be considered among the world’s best, from one of the world’s most acclaimed Merlot producing regions: Washington State. Washington State is America’s second largest wine-producing region, with over 31,000 vine acres and 600 wineries, 90% of them east of the Cascade Mountain range in the Columbia Valley of Eastern Washington, a high-plains region in which the Snake, Yakima and Columbia rivers converge. The Columbia Valley encompasses eight American Viticultural Areas: Walla Walla Valley, Yakima Valley, Horse Heaven Hills, Red Mountain, Rattlesnake Hills, Wahluke Slope, Puget Sound and the Columbia Gorge. In this semi-arid climate, vines are planted on south-facing slopes to enhance sun exposure in the summer and air drainage in winter. The Cascades block the harsh storms coming in from the Pacific Ocean and so, Eastern Washington receives only 6 to 8 inches of rainfall annually. This creates an ideal environment for wine grapes to thrive year after year. The Columbia Valley’s warm, sunny days and extended sunlight hours (17.5 during the summer growing season) help develop intense flavors while its cool nights ensure high levels of acidity in the Merlot grapes. The 2009 vintage of this limited production, 100% Syrah is sourced primarily from the Anna Marie Vineyard. Located at the south end of the Walla Walla AVA, this vineyard is one of the warmest sites in the valley, yielding grapes with concentrated varietal flavors of blackberry and blueberry and elegant tannins. The balance of the fruit was sourced from William’s Ranch Vineyard on Red Mountain. At harvest, grapes were destemmed and crushed leaving 40% whole berries intact. Lots cold-soaked for two days and then were inoculated with yeast from France’s Cote du Rhone and from France’s Cote Rotie region. Grapes were fermented for 7 days with daily punchdowns and then racked into barrels for aging. The wine aged 18 months in 75% French and 25% American oak with 38% new oak barrels. It’s spicy and with cedary cigar box notes playing of meaty, savory notes and dashes of blueberry, boysenberry and chocolate. With extended bottle age it has gained a velvety soft mouthfeel and a long lingering finish.
